Computer Geek
"...the Chancellor
of the Exchequer had just won through the the finals of
Gamesmaster..."
- Punt & Dennis's Instant Library
Given the way the rest of this site has been structured, you might be expecting exactly the same here - a few words of introduction followed by two or three links to specific examples that fit under the heading of 'Computer Geek'.
Well, sorry to say this but that's not going to happen.
For two reasons.
Firstly it's actually very difficult to find something to talk about in-depth here. There are so many different subject areas that involve computers that none of them could be done justice to by the typical 'three pictures and some text' design used on this part of the site. And sadly I have neither the time nor the knowledge to go really into depth on a subject.
Which isn't to say I don't know much. I actually know more about the workings of the personal computer than anyone with a female endocrinological system is supposed to know.
And that's my second reason. Because I want to use this space to ask:
Why are so few women encouraged to take an interest in computers? Why doesn't society recognise that there are women out there who are just as interested in comics and computers and little boxes full of flashing lights that go bleep?
I really couldn't say.
(Well, I *could*. I could put forward my theories about testosterone and male preserves and how the so-called nerds are just as macho as their muscular sporty rivals, except that they channel their energies into learning about code and chips and I/O ports and baud rates, and it wouldn't be nearly so much fun if they allowed girls to come in and play with their toys, oh no, especially if we might turn out to be as *good* asd they are... But that could lead quickly to a Dark Thought, which is catered for elsewhere on my site, and besides, my doctor says it's bad for me to think too much about Bill Gates.)
Oh well.
Such is the lot of being a girl with a hyperactive imagination and a basic understanding of such things as DVD and Visual Basic.
