All goats are ruminants. This means they chew their cud,
and have a four-chambered stomach. Unlike sheep and cows, who are grazers,
goats are browsers. They eat roughage, which is in the form of grass, hay,
twigs, bark, leaves, corn stalks, and other plant material. Roughage is
otherwise known as dietary fiber, and is required for proper digestion.
Pygmy goats, like other goats, are usually fed quality hay and grain with
other plant material as a supplement. Also, mineralized salt is available
for the goats to consume as they wish.
I feed all of my goats a local grass hay and refill
their feeders twice a day or as necessary. In the morning some goats
get a little bit of a grain mix specially formulated for goats in this
region. All the goats have lots of water, salt, and minerals
available outside.
