What are cookies? A "cookie" is a small piece of information sent by a web server to store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser. This is useful for having the browser remember some specific information. What are they used for? An example is when a browser stores your passwords and user ID's. They are also used to store preferences of start pages, both Microsoft and Netscape use cookies to create personal start pages. Common cookies which companies use are find info are listed below:
Online Ordering Systems.
Site Personalization.
Website Tracking. Targeted Marketing. This is probably one of the main uses of cookies, they can be used to build up a profile of where you go what adverts you click on, this information is then used to target adverts at you, which they think are of interest, companies also use cookies to store which adverts have been displayed so the same advert does not get displayed twice. Double click's use of cookies.
User ID's.
How Do They Work..
Security?

"Why would I want to save any cookies?"
In most cases, you probably don't want to save them. There are some cases
where the cookies are used for storing password information on certain sites, or
storing shopping cart information, etc. This is a very handy feature of Complete
Cleanup as you can select, view, and save the cookies you wish to keep. By
saving a cookie, some sites will not require you to sign on again, or your
shopping cart information will be there next time you sign on, etc..... which is the
reason why you may want to save a cookie in certain situations. (You will have to
be able to recognize which cookie to save by using the cookie viewer, or by
recognizing the name of the cookie matching the site name).
Most of the information in the cookie will not mean anything to you, as this
information is used by the website you visit, as it knows what this cookie data
means. Currently only IE cookies can be saved.
Cookie Files - There is a lot of debate on the web today on what these files are really
used for. The main purpose is that websites want to know where you are going and
what pages you are viewing, so they can customize advertisements specifically for you.
They are also used for storing passwords, storing shopping items or shopping carts,
storing user names, etc. There is also a lot of debate over what types of information is
really being passed from your browser to these websites via these cookies, and
whether or not this is an invasion of privacy. The web is full of information on these files,
and most people like to keep all the cookies safely removed, just so they don't have to
worry about what information is being used or transferred. Complete Cleanup safely
cleans all cookies, and also has a cookie viewer and cookie saver. This allows you to
"keep" individual cookies so you do not have to re-enter passwords on specific
websites (only if you choose to keep these). You can also view the cookie information,
although most of this information won't mean anything to you, but only to the website
that reads it.
The above is found from
Complete Cleanup.
How I get rid of Cookies:
I suggest going to the above listed site and reading all
the things that are cleaned up with this program. It does a
real nice job and I like it and use it daily!
