This was our first performance on tour, and most of us were a little nervous. Eventually we would get used to the concert routine - rehearse, change into concert clothes, then after the concert, change back into street clothes, load the bus and instrument trucks, and leave. The audience that night gave us standing ovations and we played all five of our encores, including the singing of the William Tell. Yes, we sang rather than played our part. Don't ask....But it's not a bad start for our tour.
After dinner was the concert. The church had really nice acoustics and we pulled off a great performance. The Adagio for Strings sounded really beautiful, and the certain sections in the Firebird were especially effective. Later Mr. Giangiulio told us how that was the first time the people in that area had ever heard the Firebird performed live.
This concert was similar to the one in the Klosterkirche. However, because of the space on the performing area, the brass had to sit behind the violins, and because of the seating rotation, Ryan and I were sitting at the back of the section, directly in front of them. When the music was at full volume we couldn't even hear ourselves playing even though we were playing as loud as we could. The church was also very live and the echoes kept confusing us. Overall, however, the concert was the best we had played thus far, although I couldn't hear it from where I was. |
