Tanis family

Tanis family originally from Ouddorp, Zuid Holland,
The Netherlands

I'm looking for my missing Tanis branches. Especially Johanna Longstraat in the US; Klaartje Tanis and son Paulus Glinthorst; and Jannetje Tanis and husband Pieter Breen.
The Tanis families goes back to the 1500s in Ouddorp, Zuid Holland. It is believed by some that they were originally from England, where they lived along the Thames River.

For information on Ouddorp please see the
Ouddorp page.

My Tanis line
(Paulus Tanis) stayed in Ouddorp until around 1837 when the family moved to the isle of Texel. It appears that at least two more Tanis families also went to Texel as the names of the children born were the same as the family names from Ouddorp.  Among them were Paulus' half brother Dirk and his wife Cornelia Nieman. For more information and pictures of Dirk and Cornelia click here.
Paulus Tanis born April 28, 1793, in Ouddorp, was the son of Cornelis Dirksen Tanis and Caatje Tijsdr. Heerschap.  Paulus married Johanna Longstraat in Ouddorp on December 7, 1827. Johanna was born June 20, 1806, in Ouddorp. She was the daughter of Pieter Longstras and Claartje Venneman.

Johanna and Paulus had four known children in Ouddorp (although there may have been more). They were: Cornelis 1827 (not comfirmed); Kaatje born around 1829; Pieter born 1831; Cornelis born 1835; and Klaartje born about 1837.

After Klaartje was born and before 1840 the family moved to the isle of Texel. There they had three more children. They were: Jannitje born 1840; Philip born 1843; and Krijntje born 1846.

On February 25, 1862, Paulus, Johanna, and the two youngest children moved to Zijpe, Noord Holland, and to the town of Anna Paulowna. The other children had already married and were already living there. On March 7, 1864, their youngest daughter died and eight months later on November 18, 1864, Paulus died in Anna Paulowna. On April 19, 1870, Johanna Longstraat left Anna Paulowna and immigrated to the United States.

KAATJE TANIS, born about 1829, in Ouddorp, Zuid Holland. I did not find Kaatje until January of 2000, when I found a record of her marriage to Dingeman Tak on a website.  Kaatje and Dingeman were married on September 19, 1850, on the isle of Texel. Dingeman was also born in Ouddorp and the son of Lena Tak.

I do not know if they had children or if they immigrated to the United States. Maybe she died soon after her marriage and that is why both Cornelis and Philip named their first born girls Kaatje and not Johanna after their mother which was the custom. If you have any information please contact me.
CORNELIS TANIS, 1836, married Johanna Tanis, on Ocober 14, 1858. Johanna was born January 11, 1835, in Ouddorp, the daughter of Everet Tanis and Catharina Bettens. Johanna died before July 8, 1864, in Zijpe, Noord Holland. Cornelis and Johanna had four children: Kaatje, Paulus, Kaatje, and Paulus, only second Kaatje lived.

On February 18, 1865, in Zijpe, Paulus married Aaltje Glinthorst.  Aaltje (Alice) was born October 7, 1837, in Putten, Gelderland. She was the daughter of Rik Ariensen Glinthorst and Aaltje Klaassen Drost.  They had five children born in Zijpe, only two live to adulthood. They were Johanna and Hendrikus.

On April 19, 1870, Cornelis, Alice, children, and Cornelis' mother Johanna Longstraat emigrated. They settled in South Holland and there they had at least one more child, Paulus born in 1872
KLAARTJE TANIS, born around 1837, married Hendrik Glinthorst on August 20, 1864, in Zijpe. Hendrik was born March 18, 1827, in Putten, Gelderland. He was the son of Rik Ariensen Glinthorst and Aaltje Klaassen Drost.

The couple had only two known children: Paulus 1865, and Hendrik who died in 1866.

Hendrik died in Zijpe on January 17, 1866. A little over two years later, wife Klaartje and their son Paulus, now three, immigrated to the United States. They left Zijpe on April 15, 1868, with Philip Tanis, Klaartje's youngest brother. They were the first to emigrate.  I'm sure Klaartje must have remarried in Illionis, but I do not know to who. A possibility is to a van der Berg.

JANNETJE TANIS
, 1840, married Pieter Breen on the isle of Texel, on February 13, 1862.  According to the 1900 census in Cook County, Illinois, Jannetje and Pieter had nine children, but by 1900 only three were living. They were Nellie, Paul, and Cornelis. Nellie and Paul were born in Anna Paulowna.

Johanna Longstraat lived with Jannetje and Pieter after Paulus died, and before she emigrated with Cornelis in 1870. By 1880 she was living with Jannetje and Pieter again in Illinois.

The Breen family emigrated in 1872, and settled in Cook County, Illinois, in or near South Holland, where Pieter Breen was a railcar oiler.
PHILIP TANIS, 1843, was the yountest son and the first to emigrate. He left Anna Paulowna as a single man with his sister and nephew, Klaartje Tanis and Paulus Glinthorst. They left Anna Paulowna on April 15, 1868. (It was the custom in The Netherlands for the women to use her maiden name all her life).

Philip married Trijntje de Jong, born September 2, 1850, in Roseland, Illinois. She was the daughter and seventh child of Pieter de Jong and Trijntje Dalenberg.

The couple had twelve childern:
