Glinthorst Family
Back to Genealogy Main Page
The Glinthorst Family was orginally from the Province of Gelderland, The Netherlands, in an area called the Veluwe, in the Northern part above the rivers Nederrijn and Ijssel. This family used patronymic names until 1812, when Arien Riksen took the surname of Glinthorst under the rule of Napoleon when it became law that all families must have a proper surname. See certificate

T
he family had been in the area since the 1600s and probably longer, but record only go back to this time.

They lived in the towns of Garderen, Ermelo, Putten, Barnelveld, Lunteren, and Nijkerk.
The Rik Glinthorst Family
Arien Riksen Glinthorst's son Rik Ariensen Glinthorst lived in Huinen, a suburb of Putten. There he and his spouse, Aaltje Klaassen [Drost] had at least thirteen children. Rik was a casual laborer, sometimes known as a day worker, and the family was very poor. Rik had a crooked leg and out lived many of his children. Rik was born May 2, 1792, in Putten. Sometime between 1848 and 1855, the family moved to Zijpe. Daughter Grietje married and stayed in Putten. The oldest daughter Truijtje problably also stayed in the area. Daughter Steventje, married a Putten man in 1862, but did live in Zijpe with her parents for awhile.

It was in Zijpe that the Glinthorst family met the Klein and Tanis families. Later the Kroeze family also came to this area, but by then some of the family members had already emigrated.

It was in Zijpe the Rik Glinthorst died in 1867 and his wife Aaltje died in 1858. Also, daughters Klaasje and Aartje died in 1866 and 1858.

Between 1868 and 1880 all living children (Truijtje, Arien, Jan, Aaltje, and Annetje) emigrated.
The Emigrants
Truijtje Ariensen first born and whose birth certificate does not bear the Glinthorst name, married Evert Ey(ij)lander on May 24, 1853, in the city of Ede. Truijtje immigrated, year unknown, to Cook County, Illinois where she died in 1896. She had six children.

Arien Glinthorst
third born has no records for a marriage and emigrated as a single man in 1873, with his brother Jan. They embarded from Rotterdam on the ship 'Castor' (a steamboat), and arrived in New York on May 9, 1873. Arien died in Illinois in 1898.
Hendrik Glinthorst was seventh born and died in Zijpe, but his widow Klaartje Tanis, and son Paul immigrated in 1868, to South Holland or Roseland, Illinois. This is one of the missing family branches that I'm looking for.  Klaartje may have remarried and Paul Glinthorst took an adopted name.
Jan Glinthorst eighth child born in 1829. Jan married Klaasje Bak in Zijpe, on October 14, 1865. Klaasje was the daughter of Pieter Bak and Maria Bijl, both deceased at the time of the marriage. Klaasje was born September 14, 1826, Den Helder, Noord Holland. At the time of the marriage Jan was a landman and Klaasje was a servant girl. They had at least three children; Rijk, 1866, died at three and half year; Maria lived and emigrated with family; Aaltje, 1868, died at 9 weeks.

Jan emigrated in 1873, and settled in South Holland or Roseland. He died sometime before 1900. Wife Klaasje died in 1901. Daughter Mary married Dirk Aardsma, son of Alle Aardsma and Jetsche de Vries. They had six known children: Allan 1889, John 1892-1957, Walter 1894, Richard 1897, Jessie 1899-1900, Jessie 1901. Jessie married Cornelius van Deursen. This is also a
missing family branch and would love to hear from someone in this line.
