Klein Family
Back to Genealogy Home Page
The Klein family was originally from the Province of Gelderland, The Netherlands, known to the locals as Betuwe, in the lower western part of the province. The first known Klein was Johan Frederik Klein married to Adriana Timmer, from Nijmegen, born about 1650.

The family lived in the towns of Randwijk, Loeron, Heteren, Elst, Herveld, Zetten, Valburg. They used both patronymic names and family names. Example, a child would be born with a proper surname or family name and then would marry under his or her patronymic name.

The Otto Klein family moved to Anna Paulowna, Noord Holland, between 1848 and 1855. Otto Klein was the son of Rut Otz Klein and Berendijn Jansen Hendriks. He married Anneke Jacobs on March 24, 1838, in Heteren, Gelderland.

The couple had five known children: Rut 1838-1875; Jantje 1840; Jan 1842-1894; Alberdina 1844-1878; Hendrika 1846-1851.

Soon after the family moved to Anna Paulowna, Anneke Jacobs and their youngest daughter died. Otto married Anna Mol in 1853. He died in 1862, in Anna Paulowna, Noord Holland.

I believe that all the members of this family died in The Netherlands, but the living children of Rut emigrated in 1881.
Otto's oldest known son was Rut born in Heteren on April 3, 1838. He married Annetje Glinthorst in Anna Paulown on October 11, 1863.(SeeGlinthorst family)

Annetje "Annie" and Rut "Ruth" had ten children between March 1865 and December 1874. Two of the children were stillborn, four others died before age six.

Children were:
Otto 1865-1929
Rijk 1866 died at four days
Rijk 1867-1949
Jan 1868-1935
Stillborn 1870
Jan Aris 1871died at seven months
Stillborn boy 1872
Jan Hendrik 1873-1876
Andries 1874 died at six years

On December 10, 1875, Rut died in Anna Paulowna. Annetje "Annie" remained in the Netherlands until May 10, 1881, when she and her sons Rijk, Jan, and Andries immigrated to the US. Son Otto stayed in Holland until he was eighteen and emigrated in 1883. Son Andries died on the ship or soon after arriving in the US.

They settled in Illinois were Otto married Eva van der Weitt and Cornelia Wesdorp. Son Rijk "Rich" married Lena Santefort and when she died he married her sister Mary. Son Jan "John" married Carrie Kroeze. (See
Pictures of the Kroeze children).

Around the turn of the century all the sons had moved to Washington State. Annie moved also after the death of her second husband Bart Baartman. On July 25, 1902, Annie married Gerrit Kroeze, she died 10 1/2 months later. (See
