Cornelia Nieman was born in Ouddorp, Zuid Holland, on July 27, 1805. Her husband Dirk Cornelis Tanis was also born in Ouddorp on April 17, 1802. The couple were married July 29, 1825, in Ouddorp. They moved to the isle of Texel between 1832 and 1839.
Dirk was the son of Cornelis Dirksen Tanis and second wife Geertruda Evertsdr. VerSluis. Dirk was a half brother to Paulus Tanis born in 1793.
