concerning the cramped living conditions of the troops. The distance between Feature 94 and 95

is 16 feet which is similar to the spacing found between other mound features within the same

row of huts. Given that the size of the trash pits is 4 ft in diameter, this would leave

approximately 12 ft for the hut—which is the dimension given for hut construction by members

of McGowans brigade. Given this spacing, this section of the camp would have been tightly

packed with very little space existing between huts and trash pits. One potential advantage to

this layout is the trash pits could have served as convenient sumps for water drainage, thus

explaining the lack of drainage trenches around the huts.

The second series of hut sites excavated are in the eastern portion of the camp and on the

upper portion of the ridge. Area 2 consists of two mounds (Features 90 and 92) and associated

depressions. Of these two hut sites, Feature 92 is the most similar to the huts just discussed,

while Feature 90 appears much larger and different from the other huts excavated.
