TERMS OF ENDEARMENT
Okay, so this is a stylish soap opera, but it is a wonderul, poignant drama.  Every aspect of this film is perfect.  Probably my all-time favorite.
BREAKING THE WAVES
One of the most devastating films ever made.  Emily Watson is brilliant.
THE SWEET HEREAFTER
An underrated masterpiece that dives into deep rooted human emotions.  This superior film works on multiple levels.  Something not to be missed!
THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING
Philip Kaufman had acheived something miraculous
with this film: translating a beautiful and haunting novel
into an amazing film.
DANCER IN THE DARK
Leave it up to Lars Von Trier (Breaking the Waves) to make such an emotional shocker such as this.  And a musical at that!  Bjork is AMAZING in this role.  Pathetic as it may seem, I had seen this film three times in the first week of it's release.
SCHINDLER'S LIST
Haunting and powerful film that has such an emotional impact on the human soul.  Brilliant filmmaking in all aspects.
Sophie's Choice
Alan Pakula's emotionally crafted film has Meryl Streep in her Acaademy Award winning role.  Wonderfully moving!
AMERICAN BEAUTY
This film presents a multitude of themes and quietly addresses each with unflinching honesty.  So glad the Academy is starting to get over their taboos and beginning to acknowledge works of art.
.
Fargo
The Cohen Brotehrs strike again in this quirky and suspense-filled thriller.  The location adds to the fun.  Funny, scary, and compelling!
sex, lies, and videotape
Amazing independant from Steven Soderbergh.  Amazing script and acting abound.
Shaekespear in Love
Completely entertaining.  Satisfying film is highlighted with an amazing script, acting, directing, and well-deserved the awards it had won.
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW
Peter Bogdonovich's adaptation of Larry McMurtry's saga of a small Texas town.  Extremely subtle and deliberate, a true American classic.
MAGNOLIA
P.T. Anderson is an amazing filmaker.  His characterization and story-telling abilities are unsurpassed.
THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?
Sydney Pollack's EXHAUTING look at a dance marathon and the contestants.  In order to create the exhustive tone of the film, Pollak filmed this in sequential order.
Manhattan
Woody Allen's ode to Bergman.  Wonderful B&W cinemetography and music coincide with a wonderful script and the most biting dilaogue!
