Story On The Scoggins---Scroggins FAMILY
Buford was born in Navarro County just out of Corsicana. I met Buford when
he came to work at Magnolia Oil Company, which was a pumping station near where we lived
on a rice farm out of Katy. He came out there to work the Mans vacation, it took eight (8)
weeks and I met him soon after he came there in 1929.
I married Buford Scroggins February 2, 1930 I was eighteen (18) in
June, 1930 and Buford was 28.
A few things I recall about my husband's family I really loved my
mother-in-law, Mary Belle, she was a large woman, never wanted any fussing and never had
anything except eight (8) children after she married "Budge" Scoggins her family
disowned her because they said Scoggins were no good Indians that only wanted to fish and
hunt and never worked , and I met several that was just that way. However I never knew
"Budge", he died a year before I met Buford.
When social security became a law 1935 Buford and Steve had the letter
"R" put in their name. So the name became "Scroggins". However The one
brother and five (5) sisters never changed or did Mrs. Scoggins. Mrs. Scoggins was called
"Big Belle" by the local people, she was at least 5'10" weight 180 pounds
very Irish in looks, blonde hair and blue eyes. Late in life two (2) of her sisters came
to see her, they were as large as Belle. The Scoggins children, all eight (8) were hard
workers so they didn't take too much after the Scoggins family.
The family always lived around Corsicana, Texas. Belle lived to be 94
years old
