SCN Launches 'Adopt a Tree' Plantation in Mardan
(09 Feb, 2004)
Mr Ghulam Nabi Khan formally inaugurated Sarhad Conservation Network's (SCN) "Adopt a Tree" Plantation Drive 2004 in Mardan on 9 Feb 2004.

In this connection a ceremony was arranged at the Mardan Medical Complex, which was participated, by a large number of college boys and people belonging to different walks of life who had gathered to show their support for a worthy environmental cause.

SCN's campaign aims to involve the young in the care of their planted saplings after educating them about the proper way of nurturing plants and imbuing them with the love for their surroundings and greenery.

The chief guest, Mr Ghulam Nabi Khan also planted a tree sapling in the compound of the medical complex. He then toured the area around the complex and mingled with the students of adjoining Ansi Degree College who were planting their saplings. The plants included citrus, lokat, kachnar, chinar, guava, rubber plant etc.
He appreciated their enthusiasm and observed that the children were our future and it was encouraging to see them get involved in such a healthy activity.

Mr Zia ul Qamar of SCN explained that 'Adopt a tree' means each child literally owns a tree and is responsible for its care. Each tree carries a small plate with the name of its guardian. This gives the child a sense of ownership and responsibility that later translates into an environmentally sound future for the coming generations.

The experts who addressed the students on the occasion included Dr Mohd Khan, Dr AR Beg, Dr Wali Mohd, Mr K A Mulk and others who later answered questions put up by the students as well.

The chief guest was briefed about the spring plantation and other SCN activities. He appreciated the fact that SCN experts from Tarnab and Peshawar have been visiting Mardan to teach the students about the care of their plants. Dr Murad Ali informed that apart from the present venue, other sites next on SCN's agenda included the Ring Road Peshawar, Govt High School Mardan, Village Qasimi, BPS, IMS and the eastern slope of the Tatara Hills that faces Peshawar and several other places in FATA.

Later, educational manuals were distributed among the participants at the end of the ceremony.
