The Governor was accompanied by CDMD Director General, Malik Saad, District Nazim Azam Afridi and other high-ranking officials. Dr. Murad Ali, Executive Director of SCN, briefed them on the occasion about SCN activities, in particular, its commitment for the conservation of the natural environment. The governor was informed about the planned plantation of trees along the entire Ring Road, covering a distance of about 5 kms from Hayatabad Exit Bridge to Bara Road. For this purpose, 6562 Sheesham and Alstonia saplings will be planted.

“Sheesham has been selected because it is an indigenous, hardy, fast growing and low-maintenance plant. Moreover it propagates easily by seeds,” Dr Murad Ali briefed the visitors. He further stated that SCN would be responsible for the digging of pits, provision of plants, arrangement of all necessary tools for plantation and employment of gardeners for at least one month after the plantation.

So far CD & MD’s water tankers have been arranged for irrigation and he requested the governor to make UNHCR tankers available for this purpose as well. "SCN would take responsibility for running costs, maintenance, and security etc,” he assured. Dr Murad Ali hoped that these efforts would have a positive contribution in improving the environment and add to the beauty of Peshawar.

Later the SCN thanked all those who showed up and praised them for their commitment towards their campaign to beautify Peshawar and make it greener and more environmentally sound.

This was followed by plantation of hundred saplings by Mr Mohd Mujeeb Khan, Head IUCN Sarhad, Prof  Zia ul Qamar, Dr Murad Ali, Dr Adil Zareef and others  present on the occasion. The highlight of the ceremony was 10-year old Khaista Gul, a local boy, who planted his tree to a thunderous applause. One activist noted the significance of community participation in such undertakings/ projects and commented that children were our future. It would be pointless to progress without them and they would serve as a ‘social fence’ in order to protect and nurture their trees.
Praying for a 'green' Peshawar.
SCN members ponder over future 'green' strategies
A large number of enthusiastic ‘Green students’ from Institute of Management Sciences, Hayatabad under the supervision of indomitable Prof S Zia ul Qamar, Usman Ghani, and renowned debater Shabana Khan added color to the occasion. SCN started the season with a bang and hopefully it will result in improvement in greenery of the Peshawar Valley. This was the first step of a thousand mile journey.
