||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Edwardes College School and Sarhad Conservation Network jointly held a two-day poster and speech contest at the school premises on 10th and 11th November 2003. It was also preceded by a poster exhibition in the school premises (work of various students of Peshawar schools and colleges collected during the WED celebrations since 2002-03) The poster exhibit remained open for audiences for a week, where students and their parents evinced keen interest in the subject themes (environment) and artistic quality of the posters. It may be recalled that "Water: 2 billion people are dying for it!" was declared the UN theme for the year 2003. Most of the participants had elaborated on the decline in water resources and the need for effective conservation methods. The first day began with the principal, Mr Humphrey Peters welcoming the SCN team to the school and informing the existence of the nature's club at the school which he said will play a positive role in future environmental concerns of public along with SCN and other likeminded organisations. Mr Adnan Akeel (Section Head Cambridge) conducted the proceedings. Dr Murad Ali, Executive Director, SCN elaborated the importance of youth in environmental campaigns and said that the future lies in their hands, as the old generation has spoiled the Mother Earth, and nature has made the young the repositories of future. He also elaborated the facts and figures of global warming and water depletion the world over and how serious the threat is to human existence if this trend is not reversed. Mrs Mina Majeed Khan also informed the students about the negative effects of pollution on their lifestyles and how a better environment can improve the general well being of the population at large. Dr Adil Zareef discussed the environmental costs of pollution and that a large sum ($ 2 billion) is spent on environmental related diseases, which can easily be prevented if proper precautions are taken and many deaths can be avoided. He also informed how trees are lungs of the earth and makes it cooler, greener and a cleaner. He said that SCN will start its "Adopt a tree" campaign in ECS and will make Peshawar a greener and better place. Mr Zahoor Durrani expressed the importance of cultural heritage and how it should be preserved for the future generations, as we cannot develop if we forget our past. Heritage provides a key linkage with our future development. The students were divided into four groups and given 2 hours to make posters on the environmental issues. The SCN team comprising of Ms Tayyaba Ahmed, Mr Zahoor Durrani and Adil Zareef visited the college on the second day (11th November) to hear the students from four wings deliver thought-provoking speeches on the global and local environment issues. Promising to become proactive members of the environmental they took the challenge to effect a change with their collective efforts. The poster exhibit by the students was equally stimulating and as. Mrs. B Yousuf, Director of Studies said it showed how important environment was for the entire world and thanked SCN for taking the opportunity to inform the students about its impact on human lives.
