The Great Wall of China

"He Who Has Not Climbed the Great Wall Is Not a Real Man"~Chinese saying

The Great Wall of China was great in more than merely its size. From its 7th century beginnings as several small walls protecting northern cities, the Great Wall of China has been a powerful symbol of the Chinese people.

Contruction of the Great Wall began in 221BC under the Emperor, Qin Shi Huang to defend his empire. Qin Shi Huang was not worried about the people however; he was concerned about his personal safety.  Qin Shi Huang strongly opposed Confucian beliefs. He burned all offensive books and sentenced thousands of intellectuals to labour on the Great Wall.
