Andy Griffin was signed by Newcastle United for around £1million in February 1998, after former Potters boss Chris Kamara wanted to raise cash so he could deal(?) in the transfer market.. Griffin can play on either side, left or right back, despite being naturally right footed. He first came into the Stoke side under Lou Macari, and looked very impressive. His lowest point was playing in the 7-0 defeat against Birmingham for us, but this didn't put Newcastle off and rightly so. Since leaving us, he has made 56 appearances for Newcastle, but has faded away under Bobby Robson after having a punch up with Frenchman Laurent Robert, which moved him down the pecking order at the club. He has fierce competition although, Sylvan Distan and Robbie Elliot are Robson's first choices, and Griffin has work to do in order to become a regular under Robson. Last season, he only made 5 appearances, and 4 of them were as a substitute. He has played 2 games for England U21, but for a player who seemed to have such a bright future ahead of him, he has faded badly and needs to work hard in order to fulfill his potential. A transfer to a 1st division outfit or lower league Premiership Club maybe his best option.
