The Quezon City Division of City Schools launched on
July 24, 2003 at the Quezon City Science High School, a program that
will institutionalize leadership training among public high school
students. The program is an attempt to answer an oft-repeated call
for young, idealistic leaders who are nationalistic, civic-minded,
socially aware and steeped in virtues and values that truly seek the
attainment of public good over individual aspirations.
Inspired by the call of Quezon City Mayor Feliciano
"Sonny" Belmonte for the youth to be empowered to influence the
course of events in the country, Division of City Schools
Superintendent Victoria Fuentes pushed for the development of the SB
Center of Excellence for Leadership Program.
The present crop of 133 students enrolled in the
Center are from a select group of fourth-year public high schools
students who have demonstrated ability to spearhead and manage
programs and events in their own campuses. The students will go
through a series of courses and activities designed to further
enhance their leadership skills and guide them in the application of
these skills and knowledge to improve their schools, their
communities, their City and ultimately, the nation.
The Center for Leadership intends to be an incubating
ground for future national leaders who will be capable of providing
quality life for all its citizens. Putting this into reality, the
training includes lectures (trainers are the public high school
principals, invited resource speakers, Division of City Schools
Supervisors and other professionals), educational trips, character
building activities, research projects and a lot more. All these
lean towards our SB’s goal of producing quality leaders for the
future.
The training has presently graduated 5 batches since
the year 2003. These alumni have now formed themselves into an
organization supported by the Scholarship and Youth Development
Program (SYDP) putting into practice what they were honed for.
