News10.com (6/13/03) said that teenager "Peter Martocci of Sayville is headed to jail after admitting that he raped a female student on the athletic field..." Court TV on April 15, 2003, said, "Martocci invited the woman to his place, an invitation police said she declined. Then the offensive lineman, listed at 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, brought her to the ground, raped and sodomized her, police said." The victim, who classmates described as being "shy" was only 18 years old.
Many of the local feminists were shocked that the school did not even start the expulsion proceedings until after the conviction. (From American College Campuses by Doreen Cameron). A Suffolk County victim's organization called VIBES said it was an outrage that the convicted football player got only 45 days! A member of the Suffolk County based VIBES who lives in Sayville said, "Is this all this girl's honor is worth, 45 days? She was so badly injured she needed to be brought to a hospital."
There is one standard in the schools for the football team, and another for the kids deemed "unpopular." Former Sayville students Melissa Joan Hart and her sister Trisha Hart made a movie called "Silencing Mary" about a girl that was raped by a football player and a school cover-up of the incident. The school supported the football player over the victim and permitted the members of the team to threaten and terrorize the her. The movie was made by the Hart family's motion picture company called "Hartbreak Films." An article by "Security On Campus" said that the movie was based and real stories and "Although a work of fiction, it incorporates elements of several actual cases " and also that issues in the movie went on in the school she went to in real life. For publicizing how schools let football players commit crimes against students, Trisha Hart won the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award.

of Hofstra University, many students areexpressing dismay after hearing that a
former football player will only serve
45 days in prison after pleading guilty
to raping a female student. twentyyear-old Peter Martocci of Sayville is
headed to jail after admitting that he
raped a female student on the athletic
field at Hofstra last October. Many
students feel that the sentence is too
light.
VIBES, a crime victims
counseling organization in Suffolk,
also says that the sentence is too
lenient, and that it sends the wrong
message. VIBES says that Martocci
was facing up to four years in jail, and
the 45-day sentence tells young men
on campus that such crimes aren�t
taken seriously.
