Many of the violent acts that have taken place in our schools have occurred in institutions with over 1,000 students. 1,000 students. The long term prevention skills can and do work, but how can school faculty know all 1,000 students. Has history has proven, they can't and students like Andy Williams, Elizabeth Bush, Kip Kinkel, and Thomas Solomon, Jr slip through the cracks until they come to school with a gun. Then everyone looks around asking "why?" The answer seems clear. These students needed help. In their way, they asked for help and no one heard or cared. But in a sea of 999 other voices, can we blame anyone for the fact that theirs was drowned out? A key, but by no means the sole solution, to ending school violence is to reduce the size of schools. Make students individuals again instead of numbers. |
