Alienation

A feeling of detachment is unhealthy for children and can lead to feelings of low self-esteem, insecurity, and isolation.

Student who have difficulties forming relationships often suffer from feelings of alientation.  They feel alone and disconnected.  This can lead to instability.

     
Few Friends
          A limited peer group can lead to feelings of isolation and alienation.

      
Need for Peer Acceptance
         When students are seeking peer acceptance, but fail to find it, they suffer from feelings of rejection and isolation.

  
  Failed Relationships With Parents
         When students feel disconnected from their parents and/or family, they feel a sense of abandonment and isolation.

School Climate

School Climate consists of the feelings of students and staff regarding their school.  The physical and emotional aspects of a school can have a great impact on the attitudes of the students.

    
School Size
         When schools are too large or overcrowded, it is easy for students to get lost.  If students are permitted to fall through the cracks, their feelings of isolation will be increased.

      Attitudes of Teachers and Administrators

          Faculty who berate students and fail to take interest in their well-being add to the feelings of isolation that some students may feel.
