A Quick Fix
Schools have decided to add more safety features in order to eliminate school violence.  These ideas are a band-aid approach to a deep problem.  Getting rid of the symptoms does not eliminate the disease.
Metal Detectors
"Metal detectors will certainly discourage students from bringing guns (and other weapons) with them unto school grounds."  --- Enough is Enough http://www.ncwebgoddess.com/schoolshootings/
"They prevent, at best, only certain types of violence, and at worst, delay acts of violence until after school, or consign it to school parking lots and athletic fields." --- ACLU Massachusetts http://www.aclu-mass.org/youth/studentrights/safeschools.html
Cameras
"Fourteen of the districts 43 high school sites have surveillance cameras at entrances and in halls." --- Philadelphia Daily News http://www.philly.com/packages/philschools/violence/viol13.html
"Basic security is provided by two school police officers, four non-teaching assistants, Bergin and his two assistanct principals, all linked by radio.  Entry is through the main door only." --- Philadelphia Daily News http://www.philly.com/packages/philschools/violence/viol13.html
Security Guards
"Cameras have been demonstrated to reduce incidents of vandelism, theft and fights in certain schools into which they have been introduced.  However, if their goal is to deterviolent attacks, there is no evidencethat they are  a solution." ---  ACLU Massachusetts http://www.aclu-mass.org/youth/studentrights/safeschools.html
"Many educators believe that a police presence on school grounds has a negagtive impact on learning." ---  ACLU Massachusetts http://www.aclu-mass.org/youth/studentrights/safeschools.html
The jury is still out on the effectiveness of these safety features in schools.  But regardless of whether or not they deter violence, they are overlooking the real issue of school violence.  Something is causing students to resort to angry acts of violence.  There is no quick fix for school violence, but there are things parents, teachers and community members can do.
