"Florida Report"

From: Aardschok America Aug./Sept. 1987

Savatage finished recording their 3rd album for Atlantic Records. Drummer Steve "Doc Killdrums" Wacholz told me of the changes made on the album since our last conversation. The album title has been changed from Vicious Experience to Hall of the Mountain King, which is also the title cut. The song is an eight minute long epic based on the classical piece by Peter Git [haha, this should say that it's based on "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg - Tracy] about an intruder that trespasses through the depths of the earth and gets chased by evil trolls. Savatage will also shoot a video for this song. The songs "Guardians of Forever" and "Before I Hang" that I mentioned in my previous report didn't make the album, but Wacholz insists that they were replaced by better material, including "Beyond the Doors of the Dark" and a fast doublebass thrasher called "White Witch." Steve also told me about a new song called "Devastation," which is a sequel to their "Holocaust" classic from the Sirens LP. The album has been co-produced by Savatage and producer Paul O'Neill (Aerosmith, M.S.G., Scorpions) and will be released in August. As for the album, Wacholz says that it's "heavier than we thought" and that "it will melt your skull."
