Betrayal of Trust

Continued....

"Daniel?" Sam glanced at O'Neill and Teal'c as, lost in thought, their young team mate didn't acknowledge her call and continued walking past their tent, his arms folded across his chest, staring at the ground. His friends recognized the stance. How many times had they watched him pace his office, the control room or some ruins they'd found, looking just this way as he searched his mind for a solution to some problem.

"DANIEL!" Flinching involuntarily, the scientist jerked his head up looking around in confusion. That was Jack's 'What did you do now' tone. "Hey Space Monkey, Sam just made a fresh pot of coffee. Did you want to join us or do you have a better offer?"

"Better offer?...Oh...No..." Accepting the offered cup, Daniel sat down, his gaze raking over Jack from head to toe, seeking any indication of the earlier illness.

"Don't you know it's rude to stare?"

Pushing his glasses up higher on his nose, Daniel canted his head to the side, questioning, "Excuse me?"

"I'm fine so stop staring at me like I'm one of your rocks." O'Neill ordered.

"Artifacts." Teal'c corrected before Daniel could respond drawing a groan from O'Neill and a chuckle from the scientists.

"Jack you were-"

"Daniel listen to me." Jack raised his hand, his index finger pointed at the sky stopping his young friend's argument before it got a good start. "I...am...fine. It was just a headache probably caused by that crap they were smoking. Now what happened afterwards."

"Nothing much. I guess now we wait until Meelay calls a gathering." Daniel had learned long ago to pick his battles and knew this wasn't the time to argue about Jack's health. He knew Jack was lying, could still see the residue of pain in his eyes. The question was whether the pain was physical or emotional. Daniel repeated the rest of the conversation adding his doubts about getting any support from Bannock.

"I know what you mean," Jack nodded. "Something about him just doesn't sit right?"

Teal'c frowned, "How is he supposed to sit O'Neill?"

"It's an expression Teal'c."

"He called us Tau'ri." Three pairs of startled eyes jerked in Daniel's direction, a moment of uneasy silence descending as each contemplated just what that implied.
