Betrayal of Trust

Continued....

"I detected no sign of Goa'uld or their influence in anything Shelaya said or did sir." Carter assured O'Neill. Knowing he liked his coffee strong, she poured him a cup before making a fresh pot. "I do agree with Daniel, she seems to know more about us then she should unless someone told her."

With her limited English, the medicine woman had answered all of the major's questions without reservation, not only about the plants but their customs and way of life.

"May I?" Shelaya tentatively reached a hand to Sam's hair. They were seated in front of her tent sharing a cup of what Carter presumed was the indigenous version of tea. Sam smiled as the other woman gently ran her fingers through the blond strands. "The sun is captured in your hair, I thought it might be warm." "Many of my people have this color hair." Carter repeated Daniel's words from their first visit when it seemed as if very villager, especially the children wanted to touch her hair, fascinated by the color just as they had been by Daniel's glasses.

"You wish to ask a question?"

"Many questions."

"Only if you ask will you learn the answers." Encouraged by the directness of the other woman, Carter decided to satisfy her own curiosity.

"What do your spirits look like?" Seeing the confusion on Shelaya's face as she tried to translate what Sam was saying into her own language, Sam tried to explain further speaking slowly and using her hands as she'd seen Daniel do. "We visited another world with people much like yours. Their spirits appeared as a wolf and a raven...bird. Is that what yours look like?"

"The spirits take many forms." The other woman searched for words. "Many times they are the ones who have gone before." As she had with Daniel, Shelaya told Sam how the spirits talked with her, giving her knowledge to help her people and advise Meelay wisely when the time came. Their conversation had been interrupted when a villager arrived, telling them of O'Neill's illness.

"Then explain how she knows...what she knows?"

"I have no explanation sir." Carter shrugged recognizing his frustration at her answer. "It would be like trying to explain the Nox or the-"

"Correct me if I'm wrong Carter...and I know you will...but I would say the Nox are about a thousand times more advanced than the Apakians. Isn't that like comparing us with the caveman?"

"Technologically yes, the Nox are more advanced but if you'll remember sir they seem to have the ability to read our minds."

"So you're saying that Daniel's right and she's using some type of telepathy." Before she could answer, Teal'c's approach caught their attention. The Apakians would be impressed knowing Teal'c had hiked to the Stargate and back on foot in the time it took them to reach the encampment on horses.
