The Engagement Party

The engagement was celebrated in Macapa, Brazil, on September 25, 2004, where Sarah spent three weeks. The party was held at Ricardo's residence and consisted of the groom's family and close friends.

In the Amazon region Sarah had a taste of the wide variety of ice cream made from local jungle fruits (not available anywhere else in the world) and witnessed the equinox at the Marco Zero Monument (a landmark where one can have the unique opportunity of having their photo taken with one foot in each hemisphere since the equator runs right through the middle of town).

She also visited the Fortaleza de Sao Jose, one of the largest colonial forts in Brazil built in 1764 out of material brought over as ballast in Portuguese ships to defend the region from the French. In addition, she had the privilege to watch the sun rise over the Amazon River on more than one occasion.

The three weeks went by fast and a farewell "churrasco" (Brazilian barbecue) was thrown in honor of the couple. Following the Brazilian tradition, it lasted all night with a lot of music, dancing, and caipirinha.

Before arriving in Miami, the couple flew to Rio de Janeiro where they spent a day on the beach and stayed at the Hotel Gloria, one of the city's landmarks.
