Indian Ocean Plants

By Dawn Kiser

Red Algae
The Indian Ocean is known for some of the most beautiful coral reefs. Inside these coral reefs hundreds of plants grow. Red Algae is one of the spectacular plants that can easily catch the human eye with it's deep red vibrancy. Believe it or not, this is an extremely hard plant. Inside the cell walls can be found a substance called Calcium Carbonate. This makes the red algae a tough plant.

Is Red Algae a food?
Red Algae, although quite tough, can be eaten by many oceanic animals as well as people. Among some of the animals to eat this algae are fish, worms, crustaceans, and gastropods. Red Algae is also known as Lava Bread, Dulse, and Nori.
