Indian Ocean Animals

Blood Shrimp The blood shrimp gets its name from its dark blood-red color. The red color appears black underwater, helping this shrimp to hide from predators. The bright colors of this species make it a desirable but expensive addition to the home aquarium. They are found in the waters of the Indian ocean.

Leafy Sea Dragon The leafy sea dragon is a rather unique species of seahorse. This fish has evolved an elaborate system of camouflage by growing leafy extensions on its body that resemble seaweed. They can often be found floating in clumps of seaweed. They feed mainly on small shrimps. Leafy sea dragons are found in the waters of southern and western Australia where they feed mainly on plankton and algae.

Orange Starfish This colorful orange and red starfish is one of the most common species. Its colorful markings and docile nature make it quite popular among aquarium hobbyists. This starfish grows to about 4 inches in diameter, and is commonly found in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia where is feeds on small sponges and algae.
