It is time for the Greatest Spectacle on Earth.
It is time for the big Samba party.
The Carnival (Carnaval) is
one of the main celebrations in Brazil. It lasts
5 days (from Saturday to Wednesday) with fun.
Carnival balls in the street of Rio, the Samba
Parade in the famous Sambadrome and a lot of fun
!.
Carnival activities around Brazil normally take
place from the Friday prior to Ash Wednesday and
continue up to and including Ash Wednesday
itself.
Rio de Janeiro is so beautiful that the locals, known as "Cariocas" claim
that after God spent six days making the world, he rested
on Sunday in Rio. Not that they ever call
their city Rio de Janeiro - they simply refer to it as "a
cidade maravilhosa" or "the wonderful city". And
despite its social problems, the city, like its people, is
warm, captivating, musical, and devoted to enjoying
itself.
One of the traditional highlights of
carnival (Karneval) in Rio de Janeiro is the
parade of the top samba schools which take place
on the Sunday and Monday nights of carnival along
the purpose built Passarela do Samba
(Sambódromo), located on Avenida Marques de
Sapucaí, close to the city centre. The
winners parade, featuring the top samba
schools from all the divisions, will take place
on the following Saturday (February or March).
But it is important to remember that Carnival activities begins
one month earlier with the famous Blocos de Rua (Street carnival bands)
which attracts thousands of people in the weekends!.
Famous Blocos in Rio de Janeiro pre-carnival are: Cordao da Bola Preta,
Banda de Ipanema, Bloco Santa Teresa, Monobloco, Bloco de Segunda ,
Bloco das Carmelitas and much more!!.
The Land of
Carnival!
But Carnival is not
just about Rio de Janeiro. It is celebrated
throughout the country. Other major brazilian carnival
celebrations are held in Salvador, Sao Paulo, Recife, Maceio and
Olinda....
The most famous after Rio, is the Salvador
Carnival.
Best time to attend Rio de Janeiro Carnival
It is better to stay one week earlier than carnaval dates or at least 4 days
earlier in order to get Hotels and visit the city. In Carnival celebrities you dont
have time to do many things.
The Sambadrome stadium (Sambódromo)
It is the samba stadium built around a former avenue (Avenida Marques de Sapucai) running through the center
with viewing stands on either side.
The Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools enter from one end of the runway and spend 75 minutes
parading down to the other end , the Praça da Apoteose
while the crowds go wild up in the arquibancadas or stands.
New rules:
Each Samba School will have a maximum
of 70 minutes to present the result of a year's
work. This involves the construction of massive allegories and the making of costumes
for an average of 3,500 samba dancers, with
creative and luxurious pieces.
A judging
panel composed of 45 members, formed by
experts in nine judgment categories, will be
attentive to the tiniest details. Seven Carnaval Associations will perform
on Sunday's spectacle, plus
six others on Monday.
Free: the Rio Street Carnival
This year more than 400 street carnival bands, called blocos parades on the city...and
it is totally free !!!. Enjoy this.
The sexy Carnival queens
