The English count Orazio Savile of Mexborough brought the Devachan castle in 1890. Devachan is an Indian word which means paradise; the second heaven of the soul and it tells the Buddhist's place of rest, while on the way to going to the state of being blessed and peace. The older Mexboroughan lord got access to the castle to live there with his wife, Lady Ivy. After his first wife, the castle was called the Villa Silvia Mexborough, but he named it to be called the castle of Devachan after he lived in India for thirty years. The lord also became a Buddhist.

This castle, located in Sanremo, in the course of time, was owned by many people. After many years, the castle was owned by an English colonel, Spencer Stenfield, and he married a Russian singer, who had a very famous career in Paris, France.

Engineer Pietro Agosti, who was from Sanremo, designed and built the castle. The liberty style architecture was requested by the English count Savile. Today, on the hill of Berigo, the castle stands. The hill is located just a couple of minutes from Sanremo's center. Mediterranean plants, cantus, palm and other types of tropical trees surround the castle.

If you are visiting the castle in Sanremo, the castle can be reached by using a street called Corsi degli Inglesi. It means translates to road of the English. The door to the castle is in bronze and there is a gate in front of, which at the time had won a medal award in England.

A large renaissance style porch is located on the castle. The furnichre is French style and belonged Louis XVI. The Louis XVI style wall paintings can still be seen in the castle today. The painters were G. Batista and Carlo and Giuseppe Bova.

The castle entered history in the 19th century when the Italian government was allowed to enter, as the owner let them. An international coherence was held there and the topic was peace in the Middle East. The negations started at the castle on April 18th, 1920. Famous Italian governmental leaders were present, during the negations. The English minister and lord were there too and stayed at the Royal Hotel.

THE RED SQUARE CHURCH IN SAN REMO

There is a church near the Royal Hotel, which is a miniature of the one in Moscow's Red Square. It was used when the Russians brought their servants to hotels like the Royal and had to pray in a similar church. The Russians used to come for most of the summer & probably some of the spring, as at the time, well before airplanes, it took a while to get there, from Moscow.
