A Sardonic Gift

By Rainer Wagner

The covenant owns a fair and beautiful coffer. It is completely made out of hardened leather, with not even a single piece of iron attached to it. This coffer was a gift from a local faerie lord to the covenant on the occasion of the conclusion of peace between him and the covenant. In the circumstances both the covenant and the lord had no other choice than to make peace, as any further act of war would have probably resulted into the downfall of both parties. Thus both parties did not like making peace with each other but had no other choice.

Every year on the anniversary of the peace agreement this coffer is found to contain some pawns of vis; indeed, it would have been a generous gift had it not been so humiliating for the magi to get access to the vis. The coffer only will open if someone with The Gift chants a hymn to the faerie lord. In this song the magus must describe himself and his sodales as silly, unworthy and inferior to the faeries. Not everyone can perform this little ritual as the person must be able to sing passably (making an appropriate roll against an Ease Factor of 6+). Any attempt to open the coffer by force or with magic will destroy its magical nature, leaving nothing except an attractive piece of furniture.

With this item the faerie lord intended to demonstrate how greedy humans are, being prepared to humiliate themselves for a little profit. Doubtless he also feels a sense of delight when he thinks of a magus singing a hymn of praise to his foe.
