Description and Background:

Sir Antony, like his father before him, is a household knight in the service of the Earl of Lincoln and Chester, Ranulf de Blundeville. Growing up in the castle of a great lord gave him opportunities that boys of similar standing in lesser households could never have; as a squire Antony would often accompany his father in the Earl's retinue as he travelled between his numerous estates, and he met all sorts of people who were involved in the great affairs of the kingdom. He was always a sociable boy, keen to make a good impression, and by listening and talking to those whom he met he was able to learn a great deal about what was going on in the world. Of course he was in awe of the Earl and his peers, and the power and wealth that was theirs to command, but instead of merely accepting his place as their servant Antony began to want everything that they had. He knew that he was clever and charming, and saw no reason why he should be content to be a glorified mercenary all his life. The Earl's Chaplain was one of the few people to see past Antony's carefully maintained innocent facade and recognise his ambition, and he decided that the boy was worth grooming as a protege of sorts. When time permitted he instructed Antony in Latin and the basics of the liberal arts, but on a strictly quid pro quo basis: the Chaplain had aspirations of his own, and expected assistance in realising them. Antony meekly acquiesced, concluding to himself that he was getting the better end of the bargain.

Antony also attained the rank of knighthood, but he knew that he would never be the warrior that his father had been. He occupies his father's nominal position in Earl Ranulf's household, but he is able to avoid the actual duties when they get in the way of his more important role as an unofficial adviser and occasional emissary to the fiefs of the Earl's allies and vassals. Obliged to serve him though he may be, Sir Antony doesn't feel any true loyalty to his overlord. The only person he's truly loyal to is himself, and he is prepared to do anything in order to secure the advancement he feels he deserves. He has no moral qualms about being ruthless or cruel, but he usually finds that deceit and manipulation suit his purposes far better. Antony is, after all, a social creature: entirely insincere, but very good indeed at sensing what other people want to hear and then saying it. He is also very cultured and knowledgeable, and armed with all of the courtly graces.

Sir Antony could easily come to be associated with a covenant of magi while travelling on the business of the Earl, who has manorial holdings scattered across several English counties. One of those fiefs could well lie close to the covenant, and Antony would be most interested in meeting magi who might be inclined to use their powers to further his career. As the trusted vassal of a great lord, there are potentially all sorts of things that he could do for them.

Customization Notes: If your troupe wishes to stick to the limit of one Story Flaw per character, it would be appropriate for Antony to lose the Favours Flaw. In this case, it would be simple enough to assume that the Earl's Chaplain taught Antony and then conveniently died before he could call the favour due. He would also need to lose some of his Virtues: Self-Confident, Social Contacts and Temporal Influence would be best, as they could all become things for Antony to aspire to in play.
