Description and Background:

Olivarus is the eldest son of a wealthy merchant, Walter of Whitby, and as such he would normally have expected to inherit the lion's share of his father's money and property. However, his father has always been happy to do business with odd customers, and when Magister Henricus came to his house and sought permission to take Olivarus on as an apprentice, he was quick to see the value of having a wizard in the family. Olivarus can still expect to receive something when his father does pass on to his eternal reward, but the family business and most of the cash will now go to his younger brother Roger. It was strongly hinted, as Olivarus recalls, that any magic he might be able to work on his family's behalf would be much appreciated, but he did not worry too much about that once he got to Aldamar. Nevertheless, blood is blood. Olivarus has done one or two favours for his mundane relatives, and he sees no problem with helping them out in the future, as long as the Quaesitores never find out, that is.

With an indulgent master and the company of other apprentices who clearly had very little talent, there was never any great pressure for Olivarus to excel as a magus. He played a lot harder than he worked, and had a great time hunting, riding, gambling and wenching. A lot of drinking went on as well. As for Olivarus' studies, he did pass his Apprentice's Gauntlet, but it was a close-run thing.

Olivarus is a bluff, boisterous, larger-than-life sort of man. He can be incredibly charming and get along very well with common folk, whereas he tends to see other magi as rarified and pompous, and feels that there is nothing wrong at all with speaking his mind to them once in a while. He sometimes describes himself as a "follower of Epicurus," as he thinks that the best way to live a healthy life is to indulge his appetite for fine food, strong drink and the company of good friends and buxom women. Unfortunately, Olivarus has a very crude sense of humour and a knack for staggering tactlessness. He calls it being plainspoken and believes that anyone who doesn't like it will just have to live with it.
