Description and Background:

As Morien understands the story of his birth, his mother was the daughter of a Welsh prince and the betrothed of an English Marcher Lord. She was cast out of her father's house, however, when she was smitten by the charms of a noble but mysterious guest - Morien's father. Morien spent his early childhood in poverty then, with little to look forward to except the animosity of the children around him and the unyielding bitterness of his mother; she could hardly vent her anger at her amour, whom she has not seen since that fateful union. But then Morien's master came for him, and he has not seen his mother since.

Nor has he ever seen the face of his master, Urazon of Merinita. Urazon's sanctum lies deep within the heart of the mountain of Cader Idris, where no mortal may find it, and Morien has never seen him without his pale grey robes and deep cowl. To Morien's eyes Urazon glides rather than walks, and sometimes Morien thinks that his deathly soft voice is imagined rather than heard. Urazon has been a distant and demanding master, and yet he has never punished Morien, who has always been too afraid of the consequences of failing him ever to risk doing so. As Morien's Apprentice's Gauntlet, Urazon sent him as a guest to the court of a lord of the Twylwth Teg, Prince Gilthonwy, and Morien does not think that he disgraced himself. Indeed, the faeries seemed to treat him with careful respect even before he did anything to earn it, and he cannot help but wonder if this was due to Urazon's reputation or his parentage. Now that Morien is a magus it is something that he fully intends to find out.

Morien is a philosophical sort, rarely surprised by anything he hears and easy to get along with because he likes listening to others. Having been surrounded by mysteries all his life, he is a keen seeker of truth and knows that he will never be able to find out anything unless he keeps an open mind and considers every possibility. But he is not very practical or worldly, and at times he can be just a bit too optimstic and sure of his abilities. Morien is pleasant to everyone that he meets, but he also feels superior to most people and can be very patronising without realising it.
