Description and Background:

Hesperia hated the Cornish village where she was born, and the village didn't like her very much either. Admittedly, she was quite fortunate compared to other girls her age because her family was quite well-off, but all her father wanted was for her to marry the miller's son and have ten children. She wanted to know why she should, and she wanted to know why everyone was always so appalled by the other questions she asked as she got older. Why, for instance, shouldn't Eve have eaten the Fruit from the Tree? What was so important about getting married and having babies? Why did everyone have to listen to Father Bernard when he was obviously a rambling old fool? Hesperia's outspokenness eventually came to be too much for her parents, who decided that the best way to get rid of the evil spirit inside her was to send her to a nunnery. What they did not know was that the monk they sent her with was not a monk at all but a magus, and he took her instead to his covenant to become his apprentice.

Above all else, Hesperia's master Alemno taught her both the value of asking questions and to realise that the answers were not all simple or clear. Solving mysteries has become her passion, and like many in House Criamon she takes a deep interest in metaphors, riddles and allegories. Unlike many in her House, she is also down-to-earth, plain-spoken and sociable in her approach to seeking out the great truth of the Enigma. She can't imagine learning anything worth knowing by sitting in a cave for fifty years, no matter what the Ancient Greeks said.
