Drucilla, filia Edith, follower of Criamon

By Angus Macdonald

(Inspired by my sister's obsession with a minor character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as my fascination with the fact that there are no truly evil magi in the canon.)

Mature Content Warning: Drucilla is a disturbed, twisted and evil character.

Description and Background:

She was not the wisest little girl, and she would go into the bad parts of town, no matter what anyone else said to her, so when her mistress arrived she went right along with her...

Mistress Edith was very kind and very cruel to the girl who became the woman now known as Drucilla. She doesn't remember her name anymore, what with the stars always whispering in her head, but she does remember Mistress Edith's very pretty dress, though sometimes there was blood on it as well. But Mistress Edith, who is terribly, terribly strict, still watches Drucilla with unblinking eyes and whispers to her of the horrifying beauty that is just beyond the Wall of Twilight. One day Mistress Edith will show Drucilla the way to that place where the sounds go so blue and green and where children don't scream so anymore, but she mustn't tell yet, oh no, because the other ones might be listening. Still, with very little effort Mistress Edith has shown Drucilla how easy it is to scratch and twitch and sing so prettily that the children will follow her and sometimes they stay as friends for a while.

Sometimes Drucilla has to do naughty things. When this happens, she is forced to blindfold Mistress Edith, otherwise Edith will see what is being done and will punish her. Once in a while the blindfold slips, and then there is terrible trouble, but mostly she is quiet enough and invisible enough to avoid the consequences. Still, sometimes there is no cake to be had.

The stars watch her and whisper to her. They hold many secrets, secrets of paths into the other places where things look just like inside her own mind, or sometimes like what is inside the minds of the children she meets. The stars are a map, and it would be a helpful map if only she hadn't given all the stars the same name; now the stars are terribly confused and won't go the right way when called. But Mistress Edith also whispers to her and promises that one day the stars will learn their right names again, and then Mistress Edith will teach Drucilla the great secret and the whispers will all stop buzzing in her ears.

Meanwhile, back on the outside of this maga...

Drucilla has forgotten how she met the one who trained her, and due to severe trauma brought on by strange experiences during her apprenticeship she is now convinced that her doll is her parens. She is slowly becoming a powerful worker of Rego magics, especially when coupled with Mentem. Drucilla is mad; she is also quite dangerous and should never be left alone near children. Children tend to go missing if they stay near her for any length of time.

She looks like one of the better off city poor, one who can scrounge together clothes that are not too old. Her hair is dark brown, her eyes grey and dreamy, and she often hums, does small dances, and smiles in a way that implies that she knows many wonderful and sad things, but she cannot tell you about them just yet. Her Criamon "tattoos" are simply a series of scars that have been carved into her flesh. The patterns make sense to her, apparently, but not to many others. It is possible that even her own Clutch fears her.

When she is in the covenant she pores over any book she can get hold of and works strange experiments. She is known to be well-versed in how to deal with ghosts and how to find regios and their nested regiones, yet her covenant-mates rarely want to take her along on expeditions, both due to her inability to communicate rationally for extended periods and her habit of looking for children.
