Description and Background:

Deacon Theubalt is not a bad man. He may not be a particularly good man, but this is not entirely his fault. He has a pleasing look about him, although he is somewhat pale and thin, and he has a rich voice, well given to discussions of finances at the diocesan meetings. He is very careful with the cathedral's funds, as well as his own, and through a combination of good luck and good timing he has enriched both the church and himself. Still, he tithes fully and regularly, often going above the common one part in ten of his income; let no one ever say he does not do his part. Indeed, he is as careful and correct in all his dealings as humanly possible, always knowing precisely what needs to be done to stay within the law and always making sure that he stays on the correct side of that line. Some say he is a bit obsessive in this direction, but he thinks of himself as more punctilious. There is a proper way to do things and an improper way to do them, and the bishop, the canons, and all the other people attached to the cathedral recognize that Theubalt does what is correct.

In addition to his proper actions during services, Theubalt is well known as a pilgrim, one who enters onto such journeys with deep conviction. Unfortunately, due to a condition of weakness that dates back to his childhood, he is unable to make long journeys. On one or two less guarded occasions he has declared that something is actively preventing him from taking longer pilgrimages and that this causes him to fear for his soul, but how could a man of such overt rectitude have such doubts?

What none know is that Theubalt's childhood was the stuff of nightmares. His parents were diabolists of the darkest stripe, and they forced him from an early age to take part in their blasphemous ceremonies. He still has dreams and waking memories of the horrors he witnessed; when he was finally able to, he ran away from home and changed his name, offering himself up as a servant to the church, no matter how lowly the position they might give him. Through a combination of native wit and dedication, with a goodly dose of fear to back it up, Theubalt advanced to his now lofty position as exchequer to the bishop of Trier, as well as becoming one of the deacons of the cathedral. His firmest desire is that the holy relics of the church and the soothing litany will form a shield between him and the demons that he knows still have an interest in the state of his soul.

In play, think of Theubalt as a man who is trying very hard to do good deeds, but entirely out of fear. He would never go out of his way to do anything wrong, and he would be horrified if it was pointed out that he had done anything incorrectly. He has both Sense Holiness/Unholiness and Premonitions, but they are not raised from their initial scores; they merely serve as imperfect warnings to him of the horrors that he holds at bay.
