Description and Background:

A slender man with black hair, green eyes, a noble profile and a ready smile, Chi of Flambeau was born with the mundane name of Robert into a merchant household in the crusader city of Tyre, on the Levantine coast. He was always a mischievous boy, periodically getting into trouble with his family and their neighbours. He was also fascinated by the knights who rode through the city on their way to fight the Saracens, and when in his early teens a passing knight offered to take him on as his squire, he jumped at the chance. The knight, however, turned out to be the magus Tau of the Order of Hermes, and he taught his charge to bring out the Gift that lay within him and wield it in honourable combat. Tau himself was a specialist in the Flambeau Schools of the Founder and Apromor, but his apprentice's magic turned out to have limited power at range, and so the latter instead followed the School of Ramius, using his magic to enhance his abilities in hand-to-hand combat. Perhaps because of this awareness of his own limitations, he developed an obsession with fighting fairly and honourably, developing a range of spells that he could draw on depending on his estimation of his opponent's (or opponents') abilities. Tau was of similarly rakish temperament to his filius, and together the pair got involved in various japes and scrapes, breaking hearts and ruffling feathers across the Levant, as well as engaging in covert forays onto mundane battlefields in order to keep their combat skills sharp.

Robert passed his Apprentice's Gauntlet easily, taking the Hermetic name of Chi, and soon after Tau decided that his charge should be encouraged to see more of the world, sending him to join a covenant in Europe. However, Chi was unable to prevent himself from getting into trouble en route, seducing the pretty daughter of a nobleman who lived, as it turned out, uncomfortably close to his new home. All hell broke loose when the nobleman caught Chi with his daughter; the young lady, now pregnant, wound up in a nunnery, while her father is still out for Chi's blood.

Chi's wizard's sigil is that his hair stirs, as if blown by an unseen breeze, when he casts magic. He votes at tribunals with his sword, which was a gift from his pater.
