Description and Background:
Brother Innocent is one of the new Ordo Praedicatorum (Order of Preachers, or Dominicans). He is a small man and would already be balding, except that his tonsure hides this point. Overall he has an unremarkable appearance, with mousy brown hair and rather commonplace brown eyes, a slightly slouching frame, and a longish, pointed nose. What he lacks in appearance he more than makes up in his mental prowess and his disposition. He takes seriously the role of his Order, the notion that heresy, so easily slipped into, needs to be corrected, but he also knows that the way to God is through love and forgiveness, not through angry confrontation.
Brother Innocent comes from a rich mercantile family in Venice, but currently he is spreading the Gospel wherever the need is found. His superiors have determined that his skills are best employed in a university setting, where he can both teach the next generation of preachers and hold public debates in the rich cities of Bologna, Salerno, and Modena.
Many of his students and fellow teachers have commented both on Innocent's quiet piety and his quick wit while teaching even the most opaque subjects. While he is devout and rigorous in his theology, he is also kindly and self-effacing. He may hold waspish opinions regarding what he labels "sloppy thinking," but he always has a kind word for those who hold such opinions, at most chiding them as one would correct an otherwise intelligent child. To Brother Innocent, the catholic views of the church are logical and even obvious, and with only a modicum of prodding and suggesting the correct answers to every question blossom before one as if a rose in the spring.
While he is a man of very few needs or desires, Innocent deeply treasures a new physical representation of his piety, an item called a rosary. This particular one was blessed by Dominic himself, thus is particularly dear to him. He is slowly helping to spread this simple device that aids the adherent in focusing his or her prayerful thoughts. His habit of kneeling in prayer while running the beads over his fingers has become a common sight to many in the community, and several copy his actions out of their high regard for Innocent's obvious piety and orthodoxy.
