Description and Background:

Audaceus was orphaned at an early age and left to fend for himself on the streets of London. He fell in with a gang of wild urchins and was well on the way to becoming a seasoned pickpocket when the magus Mandragore found him, sensed the Gift of magic in him and took him to be his apprentice. Mandragore's covenant, Meranwyn, was a quiet place, and Mandragore himself had become old and set in his ways, but his tall tales of the wild exploits of his youth awakened in Audaceus a longing for adventure and for his apprenticeship to be over so that he could accomplish mighty deeds of his own. Audaceus wanted to see the whole world, but he has learned that the British Isles have more than their fair share of wild lands, secret treasures, dread monsters and implacable villains for him to be getting along with. He expects that they'll be singing songs about him long before he ever thinks about leaving these shores. Already Audaceus has made an enemy for himself. Several times now he has encountered an apprentice at another covenant, a girl called Lassandra, and she seems determined to best him at every opportunity. Well just let her try!

Audaceus wants to be a hero. He is too energetic to enjoy the prospect of a quiet life of study, although he relishes the thrill of experimenting and taking bold risks with powerful magic. He is brave, but he does not listen to advice if it is not what he wants to hear, and he hates to be standing around when he could be doing something. Luckily, he also realises that to qualify as a hero he needs to be generally regarded as "good" and to earn respect and admiration, just like Lancelot du Lac, Richard Coeur de Lion, or that Robin of Locksley fellow that all the grogs are talking about these days.
