History

Tobias of Tamenend was born in the tiny hamlet of Victor's Crossing, in the northwestern part of the Middle Kingdom, about thirty years ago. (Like many rural people he doesn't know his birthday or exact age.) He was the fourth of seven children and the third of five sons of Menphias, a modestly proficient tanner. When tobias was ten his family moved across the border to the village of Tamenend, in one of the southern provinces of the Northern Kingdom. As a younger son he was not expected to inherit his father's trade, so when the boy was thirteen his parents apprenticed him to his maternal uncle Rophian, a brewer. Tobias found that he had no talent for brewing and hated his uncle so much that after four years he ran away and joined the Army of the Northern Kingdom, at the age of 17.

It was a dangerous decision, for at that time the Northern Kingdom was embroiled in the most recent of the Ice Wars. Tobias soon found himself a common infantryman, fighting goblins and ice trolls in the Kingdom of Jort, and was nearly killed several times by wounds or exposure. Through dumb luck and dogged perseverance Tobias survived the war and rose to the rank of sergeant before his discharge.

After mustering out of the army, the 27-year-old Tobias returned to Tamenend to pay his uncle for the three years of apprenticeship he had "stolen" by running away. He found his uncle dead, but his cousin Hilleran was glad to take tobias's money in his stead. Hilleran also helped Tobias get a job as a caravan guard, escorting pack trains from the Middle Kingdom to Underdark, in which capacity he worked for 2 1/2 years. A few months ago, Tobias decided to strike out on his own, and fell in with Tharn, Chade, Marcomir, Tadios, and other adventurers in the town of Safehurst.

The most formative perios of Tobias's life was the decade he spent as a soldier. He is a pragmatic man, who will fight if necessary but not as a matter of course. He does not consider himself to be a hero or the champion of any cause except his own. He is respectful toward magic and toward the gods, thanks to several healers who saved his life during the war, and tries to avoid offending any deities by giving small prayers and donations to all of them. He hopes to be financially independent - not necessarily wealthy (though he wouldn't mind) - and would therefore like someday to earn enough money or favors to acquire his own small business or farm.

Tharn has named Tobias his first General of Thor to help him whip the farmers into shape to form a decent Militia. He has been teaching them drills and movement as a whole into positions that are defensive in nature.
