History

Childhood

Born in the southern Dwarven Stronghold of Belfur-Kilmek in the southern mountain range, he grew up in a family that was a part of the Brewing Guild. He grew up around his father, Dorak, as he made the secret family-guild Dwarven Ale. He spent much time in his father's pub The Weary Soldier.

The stronghold was always being defended against the Orcs and Giants of the southern range. In all the years of the stongholds existence, it had never been sacked or entered by an enemy force. His father seeing that the orc hoard and giant raids had increased, payed a Dwarven Soldier by the name of Gimar to train his son in the ways of war, and the Dwarven War Axe. Tharn treated the old soldier like a second father, and learned much from him in the many years of his childhood. In fact his father would later regret his choice for a teacher when Tharn also adopted Gimar's morals and chaotic nature. As most Dwarves are Lawful-Nuetral, Tharn stuck out like a sore thumb with his Chaotic-Good ways.

The Trauma

As his father Dorak had forseen, the orcs and giants finally did enter the stronghold and slayed many dwarves and destroyed much of the dwarves many centuries of hard labor. Tharn sat and watched as his mother-Rina was viciously raped by 3 orcs, and his father was beheaded with his own axe by another orc. His younger brother Doraz was taken out into the street and his body was never recovered. After they were finished with his mother, throwing her lifeless corpse out into the street, they grabbed the 12 year old Tharn in the corner. They made a small fire in the center of the room and tied him to a spit. Tharn's wails filled the long night as they slowly burned the one side of his body. Tharn has blocked most of this from memory, but fire and a womans scream, are usually reminders of it and it all comes flashing back. The orcs also disfigured and cut Tharn in many places. Tharn is now incapable of having children due to the torture and disfiguring. The orcs were going to finish him off, when Gimar came into the family house and slayed the 4 orcs. Gimar wept bitterly and tore his beard, and covered Tharns body and held him close.

The Aftermath

Tharn trained relentlessly under Gimar's guidance. Gimar became his Adopted father and took Tharn into his home, since all of Tharn's other family also had died in the carnage. Gimar took over the family pub The Weary Soldier and put his axe of warfare down, since he was too old to continue. Tharn learned more of the trade and helped Gimar learn the ways of the Brewing-Guild and told him some of the secrets of the trade.

The Rebellious Son

Tharn had adopted Gimar's attitudes but not his restraint. He broke many of the "lesser laws" and earned himself a reputation as a "code-breaker" and as a small time thief (he always got caught). The last straw for the Guild Masters (the government of the Stronghold) was when Tharn got in a fight with an older (more political) Drunken Dwarf named Thorak. Tharn broke the dwarf's arm, nose, and wrist and also inflicted much internal damage. Thorak was in the infirmary's care for 3 months and would have died with out the help of some very rare herbs and the excellent care of the Stronghold Cleric Dur. The guild not wanting to kill the boy, knowing his past, decided that for the good of the Stronghold they would Exile the boy for a period of 10 years. If after that time he had mended his ways, he could return and inherit all that was due him from his father's demise. Gimar was to be intrusted with keeping all his inheritance until he returned. Tharn was to leave with enough rations for a week, the clothes on his back, and his Waraxe.

The Wandering Axe-For-Hire

Angry with the world, and bitter at the gods for treating him this way, he decided to go north and leave all the southern lands behind him. He wanted to make for the Nothern Mountains and see what fate had in store for him. He hoped that fate would be kinder to him than it already had. Then he bumped into some other wanderers and met a merchant, by the name of Herkel...

Recent History

Tharn has achieved the Defender of Thor class by freeing the Temple of Thor from the trapped Air Elemental with the help of his comrads. He now has the responsibility to spread the faith of Thor, and to gain followers to populate his newly restored temple and faith.

The Crazy Lady of Devon has told him, "You have the fate of the world in your hands." Something that put Tharn at ease... He now feels himself being pulled along a path that he sometimes would rather not be on. People keep telling him that he is a "Great Leader and Hero" when all he feels like is a Dwarf with humble beginnings in a small Tavern. He knows someone must raise the people against the coming war with the North Orcs, but why must it be him?

Tharn has accepted this goal: to raise the northern peasants and farmers and workmen into a Militia to stop the orcs, since no one else seems to be training them or warning them. He hopes that he is doing the will of Thor and that all is as it should be. He was a drinker before, but with all of this stress of "greatness" he drinks ale instead of water. Thank goodness alcohol doesn't affect him like other people.
