He specialized in small and very hard to obtain items. Those items ranged from very rare spices, herbs, and oils to the odd magic item.
Recently the adventures found evidence that Herkel wasn't completely honest with them. The first assignment they received was to locate his lost children in the sunken Safehurst Castle not far from his home. The Adventures found the children but they appeared to have been animated from the dead some time ago. When the adventures returned Herkel had left a message for them that he had urgent business to attend to and would return in three days time. Herkel never did return but sent a messenger with their promised reward. With that reward he also included a mission. He asked them to retrieve a rare dagger called the Dagger of Names from a long forgotten Dwarven tomb. The adventures took the quest but failed to return with the dagger. Since that time the adventures have received no further communication from Herkel. Upon reaching Underdark and hearing of the missing prince they have also learned that the signet rings the adventures recovered (and gave back to Herkel) from the sunken castle where from the royal house of Underdark.
The adventures now believe that Herkel may in some way be involved in the kidnapping of the prince.
Herkel had Prince Aldric and made a deal with the Dark Mages of the Savage Land. He was to give over Prince Aldric in exchange for the knowledge of raising his dead wife.
When the party found him in his mansion outside of Devon, he was dead with a puncture wound in his neck, and half eaten by his undead wife. They also discovered he was searching for very powerful artifacts.
Either Chade or Prince Aldric killed the Merchant.
