| caster, are accepted more than compulsions, which force the spell's subject to act in a certain manner. * Evocation. Evocation spells manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power to produce a desired end. In effect, they create something out ot nothing. Many of these spells produce spectacular effects, and evocation spells can deal large amounts of damage. * Illusion. Illusion spells deceive the senses and minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, to not see things that are there, to hear phantom noises, or to remember things that never happened. Wielders of shadow magick are often skilled in the School of Illusion. * Necomancy. Necromancy spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving undead creatures make up a large part of this school. As a general rule, study of this school is banned by all civilized nations and cultures. * Transmutation. Transmutation spells change the properties of some creature, thing, or condition. |

| Just as magical effects can manifest themselves in many different ways, such as powerful bolts of lightning or charms to manipulate someone's thoughts, so too does the access to that magick differ. In modern times, most casters, whether arcane, divine, or nature-based, are flexible and can create the effects they want through a combination of words, gestures, and materials. Some, however, choose to focus their spellcasting in a particular area. Many of these practices are ancient, and few are still used in the modern world. * Alchemy. The practice of alchemy is thought to be as old as, if not older than, the practice of traditional magick. The alchemist measures, mixes, and combines various ingredients to achieve a diverse array of effects. Alchemists are known for creating potions that, when imbibed, replicate the spell effects created by other types of casters. They also create other materials as well, such as special parchments, powders, and alloys. The practice of alchemy is found almong humans and Shagir. Other races seldom have the talent or desire to work in the solace of a laboratory. * Astrology. The process of determining nativities and charting the progress of the planets through the various astrological houses has been practiced since ancient times in order to help predict the future. Astrologers are sought out all throughout the Samothian World Continent in order to legitimize a royal birth, divine the future of an important quest, or to tell the fortunes of an imperial house. Each race has a tradition of astrology, as do most of the major world religions with the exception of AEtonism, which equates the practice of astrology with that of deviltry. More on astrology can be found here. * Blood Magick. The practice of blood magick is feared and loathed by those who do not understand the foundation upon which this particular art is built. Blood mages (sometimes referred to as blood witches) have developed a keen understanding of the power that a person's blood plays in the casting of spells. The tradition of ritual scarring and bloodletting is found among many primitive cultures, and this forms the basis for the practice of blood magick. Blood mages can create spectacular effects by fueling the arcane energies of the magick in their own blood. This is highly dangerous and a blood mage who uses the power without self-control may accidentally bleed himself dry when casting a powerful spell. Other blood mages are able to affect the blood in other people, such as causing a subject's blood to suddenly coagulate and harden into spikes that thrust out of its flesh. Both the Bakke and Dorain are known to practice blood magick. It is little known outside of these two peoples. Its practice is limited mainly to inherent spellcasters; it is not a craft that is taught. |
