| The 21st of Darkel
Unable to cleanse the cursed haven of the Undead Cleric and missing two of their number, the Company begins to leave the Banewarrens. As they pass through the labyrinthine passages of the underground chambers, the Company encounters Silara and Avi, who had magically disappeared when running toward the Undead Clerics unholy resting place. After Jeremi prays to ton and heals them, the Company returns to the surface. While above ground, Jeremi visits the tonist temple in Bima Hara where High Priestess Mara works. During his audience with her, Jeremi requests a scroll that would enable him to hallow the Undead Clerics haven and destroy him forevermore. High Priestess Mara is concerned that Jeremi is not focusing on what should be his primary task finding the Sword of Lies and sealing the Warrens. She offers him the magical scroll, but unfortunately asks Jeremi that he and his companions donate the scrolls value to the Cathedral so that she and her fellow clerics may continue to do the work of ton. The Company returns to the Warrens forthwith, noticing, as it had before, that doors that were once open are now closed. As the Company enters the cavernous altar room where it had previously fought the Undead Cleric and four undead warriors with spiked chains and swords, four more undead warriors emerge. Jeremi calls upon ton and causes one of them to flee. Cirend, in a whirlwind of melee combat, handily dispatches the remaining three creatures. With a bow, he slays the final creature. The Company enters the eerie chamber where the Undead Clerics essence retreated after the last battle. Although the wooden reliquary Cirend previously smashed remains shattered, the 13 black candles that had been snuffed out are lit once more. When Cirend hacks the candles, the Company senses that something has been released from them. Jeremi senses the vampires essense hovering in the dark recesses of the evil chamber. Silara begins the day-long ritual to consecrate and hallow the chamber, to smear at least a patina of good over a chamber soiled with literally centuries of foul deeds. As Silara utilizes an ancient ritual of the Druids of the Jade Circle to call upon the power of nature of cleanse the chamber, Sebastian searches the chamber and locates two secret doors. Sebastian also finds various incense burners, crystal bowls, vial containers and bowls all of which glow with magical essence. When Silara is midway through the spell, the Undead Cleric the Company knows as The Betrayed coalesces into corporeal form and attacks. Cirend charges him, keeping him far from the chanting druid. Cirend manages to trip the Cleric, and to land multiple blows with his holy weapon. The Betrayed wards away living creatures, causing Logan, Avi, Uso and Sebastian all to flee the room in terror. Cirend continues his assault, aided by Jeremi, who aids in the combat by calling forth arcane missiles from his fingers that inflict magical force damage. The Cleric is ultimately reverted to gaseous form once again. Twelve hours later, Silara finishes the ritual. As it ends, the Company hears a flesh-rending scream following by a low, melodious whisper of gratitude. For the first time since he was tortured and slain by his comrades over the altar he tended, the Betrayed is truly at rest. The 22nd of Darkel The Company sets out to explore the Warrens further. The Company starts by returning to the untested door in the large chamber with the broken altar. Beyond the door lies a long, dark hallway. The first opening to the left contains a stone stairway that ascends and opens into a chamber with vaulted ceilings and four alcoves. At the far end of the room is a wall of force that shimmers like a rainbowed curtain; it radiates raw magical power. Each of the alcoves contains two stone statues, each which can be moved to sit in one of two positions. There are eight statues in total, depicting a man in robes, an angel with four wings, a woman in robes, a dragon-man, a knight, a woman with wings and tail, an angel with a flaming sword, and an ogre. Curiously, each statue is in the same position, on the leftmost of the two positions. The Company surmises that the proper positioning of the statues may remove the prismatic barrier and enable them to proceed further. The Company decides to search for clues as to the proper combination, and to return to the room. |
