| INDIAN SUMMER July 4th - Oct 8th 2000 |
| India is in a class of its own. It is a wacky, crazy and highly unpredictable country, and each day is vastly different from the next. I can't imagine going to another place like it ..... where everything I saw, smelt, touched and encountered was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The poverty levels are disgusting. The towns and cities are filthy and smell of piss. There are alot of liars and corruption. The driving is suicidal. The belief systems are (to the 'western' mind) illogical, inconsistent, and many times absurd. Yet somehow India works. Its as much its horror as its beauty that make it so fascinating. Amongst the haze of pollution and destitution is a country unbelieveably random in its beauty and its ugliness. India is full of extremes : a frustrating argument with a cheating rickshaw driver is usually followed by a friendly conversation with a passerby. The smell of shit can sometimes be accompanied by one of the most beautiful sunsets to be seen anywhere in the world. And giving sweets and being friendly to child beggars may lead to them actually having a reason to smile for the first time in their lives. |
