Sam's closest friends are Frodo Baggins, Meriadoc Brandybuck, known as Merry, and Peregrin Took, known as Pippin or Pip. Sam is also friends with Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag-End, who is Frodo's cousin.
Sam's father, known as "the Old Gaffer," used to do the gardening at Bag-End. Eventually, the Gaffer had gotten to old to tend to it, and he now works at the Green Dragon Inn. So, Sam took over his father's job at Bag-End, and in his spare time he helped his father out with the Inn.
Also, in his spare time, he listened to Bilbo's tales of his adventures outside the Shire, of the thirteen Dwarves and Smaug the Dragon, and Gollum and such.
Some hobbits think that because Sam has spent so much time at the Bagginses' house, that he too is strange like so many hobbits tend to think of the Bagginses; especially Bilbo.
Sam is a proper enough hobbit, unlike Merry and Pippin. In fact, whenever he is involved with their schemes, he always ends up regretting it. Though, there is one thing that makes Sam even more jittery than a scheme like that, and that's when he sees the girl whom he likes and nearly loves so much: Rose Cotton, or more commonly known as Rosie.
As seen in the first movie, you can tell that he gets nervous around her, especially when Frodo pushes him into her so that Sam might be able to dance with Rosie. He did seem to be enjoying the dance, though. :)
