Introduction

Madison knew the moment she met Mark that they were destined to be together.  Not only did their first names start with the same letter, something Maddie had always thought was so cute; but it could be no coincidence that someone named Madison Rose Monroe would meet someone named Mark Jackson Adams.  Their parents' twisted sense of humor, combined with their love of presidential trivia, made them a perfect match.  Almost like when Mark's parents had met: they had been Ruth Jackson and Henry Adams.  And since Mark always said what a great marriage his parents had, and still have, they were bound to belong together.

Maddie LOVED being married.  She and Mark had dated exclusively through their junior and senior years of college.  They were together constantly.  Maddie hardly ever went home during breaks.  She'd much rather spend all her free time with Mark. Sure she missed her Dad sometimes, but she sure didn't miss Jenna, her stepmom, or competing with her half brother, Robbie, and half-sister, Brianna.

Maddie and Mark grew up having had completely different lives.  Maddie was born in Teaneck, NJ, to Richard and Anna Monroe.  Madison was the baby of the family.  Her brother, Michael, was five years older and her sister, Elizabeth, three years older.  Maddie's mother died when she was ten.  Anna had been diagnosed with a rare blood disease.  She died within two months of the diagnosis.  There was nothing the doctors could do.  Maddie withdrew to her room a lot.  She really missed her mom.  Richard had tried to coax her out a lot, even though he was still grieving tremendously.

Meanwhile, Mark Jackson Adams was born in Bellaire, Maryland.  He was the oldest of 5 siblings: Mark, Melissa, Sandra, Julia, and Donald.  Mark's father, Henry, was a college professor, and they moved around a good deal while Mark was young.  Mark went to grade school in Wisconsin and Michigan, and to High School in two different towns in upstate New York.

Melissa was three years younger than Mark, Sandra was about a year and a half younger yet, and a similar interval separated her from Julia.  Donald was the baby, a good three and a half years younger than Julia, and almost ten years younger than Mark.

Maddie and Mark met at college, in upstate NY.  Maddie was a major in Communications, while Mark majored in History.  They didn't have too many classes together, but managed to spend all their free time with each other.  They lived together for three years after college, while Mark got his law degree.  Then he popped the question and they were married.  But it was only a formality; Maddie felt married to Mark from the minute they met.

Mark knew exactly what Maddie wanted and needed.  Maddie had been VERY close to Richard growing up, especially after her mother died.  They did everything together.  There had been a few tough years when Maddie was a teenager, but Richard found that when he was strict with his daughter, she bounced back.  He never would have believed that when he brought discipline back into her life (He had stopped spanking Maddie when Anna died), it would be what she needed to turn her life around.

Mark's family was very loving, but a bit chaotic.  Still there were certain basic routines that did not vary, and certain lines that none of Henry Adams's children crossed -- or not more than once, anyway. When any of the children was seriously naughty, their father's remedy was "a good paddling", and it seemed to work well.

Mark was a pretty good kid, and didn't get spanked very often, but his sisters were a bit more unruly. Donald was perhaps a bit more indulged, Henry and Ruth having learned that some things were not quite as crucial as they had thought -- besides, Mark and Melissa wound up in charge of Donald a good deal of the time. Neither of them was allowed to spank their younger siblings. They could, and did when things were serious, report misbehavior to their parents, which would generally result in a hot seat for Donald. But it also tended to result in some awkward questions for whoever was "minding the baby", and once or twice this led to a shared spanking. So Mark and Melissa usually found ways to keep Donald in order without needing to report to their parents.

Mark saw his sisters spanked relatively frequently. Not every day or even every week, but it did seem like about once every month or two someone would wind up getting spanked, and those spankings were more often than not in the living room, in front of whoever might be around. And the spanked miscreant generally had to do corner time afterwards, again where she (or he) could be seen by all and sundry. This was embarrassing, even if not quite as bad as the spanking itself.

Maddie's spankings had always been a private affair, over her daddy's lap, in her room.  Corner time had always been done before, while waiting for her father to come up to her bedroom.  They were a time for thinking about the misbehavior.

Now when Maddie was in trouble with Mark, she often did corner time before *and* after a spanking, for different reasons.  As Mark explained to Maddie once, corner time fulfilled several functions. Corner time before a spanking allows the spanker to cool down and "never spank in anger".  It allows the spankee to think about what she was getting and why, and to mentally accept the coming spanking and that she deserved it.  Corner time after a spanking serves as an additional punishment.  It lets the spanking sink in, and the reasons for it to be appreciated.  At Mark's insistence, their custom has become that after corner time, that Maddie must usually say out loud what she did wrong, why it deserved punishment, and how she will do better in the future. Then she is forgiven and hugged. This is the routine that Mark's parents generally followed, and for him it is just part of the way a spanking ought to work.  He does not always follow the whole routine, but that was his usual course in major spankings.

Maddie loved that Mark was in charge of her.  It made her feel so safe.  It was almost like having Daddy around again, but it was different.  It was a different kind of love than what she had for her father.  No one liked to be spanked, but when Mark did it, it made Maddie feel better afterwards.  She always knew she could count on Mark to make her feel forgiven.

Mark had been thrilled to find someone like Maddie to share his life with.  He often compared his marriage to that of his parents'.  He knew they had a very happy marriage.  His parents hadn't argued much when Mark was growing up, but gradually Mark had became aware that occasionally when there did seem to be a serious dispute between them, Henry would quietly tell Ruth, "We'll discuss this upstairs, dear." After one of these 'discussions', his mother sometimes looked a bit flushed in the face, and walked a bit more slowly than usual.  It took a while, but eventually Mark figured out that his father spanked his mother from time to time, and it seemed a reasonable, if private, part of a normal world.

So why would it be any different when he himself got married? And since it worked so well for Maddie, it was great.  Well not always so great...even though Maddie 'signed on' for the type of discipline she received, she was not always happy about it.
