Gossip

It had been a long day and Mark couldn’t wait to get out of his shirt and tie.  He had already laid his suit coat on the back seat.  He was looking forward to a nice, relaxing evening at home, unlike the weekend nights when he and Maddie went out.  Mark pulled up in the driveway, went inside and stopped at the counter, to look through the mail.  Mostly bills.  Figures.  They could wait.  He was looking forward to a long, hot shower, and then maybe a quick dinner, followed by a few hours in front of the boob tube, snuggling his young wife.  When Mark got upstairs, Maddie was sitting on the edge of the bed, gabbing on the telephone.

Mark came into the room and quickly pulled off his tie.  He waved to Maddie.  She looked up from her call and waved back.  Then she turned away from Mark and spoke into the phone in a loud voice.

“Look, Deidre, I said I WAS SORRRRRY, how many times do I have to say it until you believe me? I just wanted to share in your happiness.”

Mark got interested now.  He knew that Deidre was a colleague of Maddie’s in her office.

“Deidre, I didn’t KNOW,” Maddie said irritatingly.  Then she sighed.  Mark was curious as to what Deidre was saying on the other side of the phone.  He finished undressing and waited for Maddie to finish.

“Deidre, I’m sorry.  Well okay, I did know, but still.”  That loud sigh again.  “Fine.  Good bye.”  Maddie slammed down the phone and growled.

Mark frowned a little at the tone of Maddie’s voice.  Whatever it was, hanging up that way was not good.  “What’s up, Love?”

“Some people are so touchy,” Maddie said.  Then she seemed to shake it off.  She definitely did not want to discuss this situation with Mark, especially the minute he walked in the door.  She came over to him, slid her arms around him and hugged him really tight.  Maddie then put her mouth up for a kiss, and Mark kissed her nice and long.  He also touched her bottom and she moaned.

“Good day?” she asked, smiling.

“Long day,” Mark answered.  “What was Deidre so upset about?”

“Oh, it’s nothing.  I don’t wanna talk about it, hon.  Hey, you know I didn't start dinner yet, I thought maybe we could grab a pizza?”

“Sounds good.  What should we get on it?”

“Meatball?” Maddie asked.

“I didn’t think I went well with tomato sauce,” Mark joked.

It was just what Maddie needed. She giggled and smiled at her man.

Then Mark said, “Meatball it is.  Why don’t you order one while I grab a quick shower?”

“Okay, hon.”

As Mark walked into the bathroom, he heard Maddie muttering, “I can't believe Deidre got so upset; this is the happiest time of her life.”

Mark poked his head out and asked, “She's getting married, right?”

But Maddie shook her head.  “Mark, we were at her wedding two years ago; don't you remember?”  Mark didn’t answer. Then Maddie continued, “She's pregnant!”

Mark turned the water on.  “Wonderful! So, what is wrong?  Is she getting moody?”

Maddie really didn’t want to have this discussion with Mark.  She waited until he was in the shower and then explained.  “Well she isn't 3 months yet, but she started telling a few people.  I was so happy for her; I just wanted to share in her happiness.”

There was silence.  Maddie wondered if Mark didn’t hear her because of the running water.  She knew she probably shouldn’t have mentioned this to him at all.  “I’m going to go call in the pizza!” she yelled.

Maddie hoped the conversation would drop. She ordered the pizza, went downstairs and set the table for two.  She opened a bottle of wine; hoping that would relax Mark.

Mark came down about ten minutes later wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants.  “So, Maddie, why don’t you tell me just how exactly you went about sharing Deidre’s news?”

Maddie grimaced.  She really didn’t want to answer that. The more she thought about what she did, the more she realized that maybe it hadn’t been the way to go at all.

“Well um, I just told a few people, hon, it's no big deal.  Come on, let's have some wine while we wait for the pizza to get here.”  Maddie poured two glasses.  She held one out to Mark.

Mark shook his head and said, “You told people she wasn't ready to tell, is that it?”

Maddie wanted this discussion to end.  But she knew Mark was not ready to drop it.  Very sarcastically she said, “I told a FEW people!”

Mark said, “Maddie, your tone!”

“Sorry, sir.  It's no big deal.  She's just emotional; that's all.”

“Well people do get emotional when pregnant, as I understand,” Mark stated.

Maddie nodded.  “She’ll be over it by tomorrow. Everyone was really nice to her and congratulating her and everything.”

“Everyone?” Mark asked, going over to his wife and turning her to face him.

“Well everyone I told, I mean.  The few people, that is,” she said a little shakingly, taking a long sip of wine.

Mark took her glass of wine and put it down on the table.  “Just how many were these few people that you told, Madison?”

“Madison.”  They were moving up to full name.  Soon it would be first and middle name.  Once again, Maddie wasn’t liking where this conversation was headed.  Mark was waiting for an answer.  Maddie started to count on her fingers.  “Umm, well.”

“Yes?” Mark asked, his eyebrows going up.

“Maybe four or five people.  All her friends.  People who love her,” she said, heading back for the kitchen.  “Pizza should be here any minute.  I think I’ll toss a salad for us.”

Mark watched her.  “I think we need to discuss this,” Mark told her, watching her take out the ingredients for the salad.

“Discuss, sir?” Maddie asked tentatively.  She was hoping he meant ‘talk’ and not the other kind of discussion that left her bottom particularly red and sore.

Mark took the carrot peeler from Maddie and started peeling the cucumber, while she washed the lettuce.  “These were people Deidre wanted to tell herself? Maybe at a later time?”

Maddie took in a deep breath. She took some paper towels and blotted the lettuce dry in the colander. She always hated soggy lettuce.  Ummm, I dunno, she didn't actually say not to tell anyone, well maybe she did, but I, um, I was just really excited for her, and I knew it would get around work fast enough.  You know how the grapevine is there, and I wanted to share it,” Maddie admitted.

Maddie really wanted to just drop the whole subject.  She was relieved when the doorbell rang signifying that the pizza was there.  Mark took his wallet off the counter, opened it up, and handed Maddie a twenty dollar bill.  She answered the door and talked with the pizza delivery boy for a minute.  Meanwhile, Mark was going over the situation in his mind, wondering how he would get the whole truth out of his wife.  Maddie was hoping they could talk about other things.  Mark waited while Maddie took the pizza in and set it on the countertop.  She placed a slice on each plate and put the salad bowl in the middle.

“So how was work today?” Maddie asked Mark as they sat down.

“Work was fine.  Things are moving ahead nicely.”

“Good, and uh, what about that meeting you had to reschedule?” Maddie asked.  She feigned being really interested in Mark’s job.  She wanted to talk about anything other than what had happened that day with Deidre.

“Maddie, don’t you think you owe Deidre an apology?”

“Mark, I apologized to her ten times at work, and twice since I’ve been home.  Why do you care about this anyway? It’s just office gossip.  Let’s talk about something else,” Maddie said, getting very defensive.

“Well perhaps there is no more to say at the moment.  It sounds as though Deidre is very upset.  But Madison, when there is a problem between you and someone else, I want to know about it.”

“Why?”

“It is okay for me to ask about such things, and you know it.  When there is a problem, Maddie, you don’t shut me out.  How can I help you keep on an even keel if you do?”

Maddie was annoyed now, and more than a little defensive.  She ate her pizza silently trying to come up with words that would not get her further into trouble.  “I don’t need you to do that sometimes, Mark!”  She did, though, and both of them knew it.  Maddie didn’t want to be in trouble; she tried hard to push Mark away.

“Really? Who sets those limits for you, Madison?” Mark asked, in an even tone.

Maddie bit her lip.  “You do, sir,” she whispered.

Mark nodded.  “Then after dinner, how about 25 copies of 'I will be more open with my husband’.”

“Mark, noooooooooooo!” Maddie whined.

“Want to try for 50?”

Maddie wanted to stomp and pout and whine so badly, but it would only get her over Mark’s lap, so she resisted.  “No, sir.”

“Good girl.”  They both ate their first slice, and Mark went to get a second one.  Maddie refused a second slice; she was watching her weight.

They ate in silence for about five minutes.  Finally not being able to stand it, Maddie asked, “Are you angry with me, Mark?”

“Well, I'm a little unhappy with your trying to keep me out -- it feels as if you think you are in trouble and are trying to hide it.”

“I’m not hiding it, sir.  I TOLD you what happened.”

“And,” Mark began, giving Maddie the LOOK.  “I’ve never been all that fond of gossip.”

Maddie looked down and said, “Yes, sir.”

“So consider this a warning, Maddie.  But that’s all it is, for now,” Mark said.  He knew his wife loved to gossip and he highly disapproved.  They finished their meal and Mark offered to clean up and do the dishes, so that Maddie could get started on her lines.

When Maddie was finished, she presented them to Mark.  He approved and pulled her into his lap for a big hug.  “I’m sorry, sir,” she said.

“I know, baby.  It’s all over now,” he replied.

“I think I’m gonna go take a shower, Mark.”

“Okay, hon.  Maybe we could do something when you come out.”

Maddie smiled.  She had a few ideas.  While Maddie was in the shower, Mark answered a phone call.  It was Deidre.  He was shocked at the things she told him.  He told her that he would speak to Maddie and she would return the call later on.

Mark went upstairs to the bedroom.  Maddie was just coming out of the bathroom, toweling her hair dry.  “Madison? Just who did you tell about Deidre?”

Oh geez, not this again!  Maddie thought.  She thought they had finished this discussion.  “Hmmm?” she asked, nonchalantly.

“Is there anything else you want to tell me about all this?” Mark asked, in that no-nonsense tone of voice.

Maddie went over to her vanity and kept her back to Mark. She didn’t want to look him in the eyes.  “Are you still going on about that, Mark? Can’t we just drop it, please?”  She slipped a long t-shirt over her head.

“Once I’m convinced I have the whole story, we can be done with it.”

Maddie felt very pressured.  She did not want her husband to find out just exactly what had gone on at work that day.  Whyyyyyyyyy? Who died and made you boss?” she said exasperated.  She obviously was not thinking about who she was talking to.

But Mark took it in stride.  He didn’t go off the deep end.  He said very calmly, “Uh, you married me and made me boss, remember? Something about ‘obey’?”

“Oh yeah, that.” Maddie was surprised Mark reacted the way he did; shocked he didn’t freak on her for being sassy.  “Mark, I don't wanna talk ‘bout it anymore, I'm upset that Deidre is mad at me.”

Mark decided to give his wife one more chance.  He had already heard enough about what happened from Deidre herself, but he wanted Maddie to admit it to him.

“And I've had enough evasion, and enough sass, for a while, Madison Rose. Is there, or is there not, any more to this story?”

“I told a few people, all right?”

“A few people?”

“Umm, well maybe a few more.”

“I see. Would those "few more" happen to have included everyone present at your divisional staff meeting?”

Maddie dropped the brush she was holding and whipped around to stare at Mark.

“WHO TOLD YOU?” she whined.  When he didn’t answer, she asked, “And if you already knew, then why are we playing guessing games?”

Mark stared at his wife.  “Why do we need to play guessing games? When I ask you about something, am I not entitled to the full truth, without evasions?”

Maddie sighed and slowly nodded her head.  She looked at the floor and said, “Yes, sir, I’m sorry.”

“Oh you will be, Madison Rose.”

Markkkkkkkkk!” she pleaded.

“That wasn't just gossip.”

Maddie tried to think of something to say that would make what she did seem okay.  “Everyone was happy for her,” she tried.

“But she hadn't planned to tell her boss for a while -- this may affect her career path.  Am I wrong here?” Mark asked.  He tried not to seem mad.  Spanking in anger was not the way to go.

Maddie bit her lip.  “I don't know.  I didn't think about that.  I was just so happy for her.  It came out before I had a chance.”

Mark picked up Maddie’s hairbrush.  She very much doubted that he was going to brush her hair with it.  He sat down on the edge of the bed, and moved Maddie in front of him.  Mark tapped the brush into his palm and looked right at Maddie.  “Okay, I accept you didn't intend to violate her confidence, but that is what you did.”

“Yes, sir,” Maddie said, eyes downward.

“And then you tried to deceive me about it, didn't you, my girl?”

Maddie’s eyes welled up with tears.  She closed her mouth, afraid to speak.

Very quietly, Mark uttered, “I am VERY disappointed in you, young lady.”

They were the words Maddie hated to hear.  “Me too, sir,” she said, still staring at the floor.  A sob slipped out and Maddie said, “I didn't want to talk about it, because after I realized what a big mistake I made, I didn't want to believe I had really done it.”  More sobs now.  “Oh, Mark!” she cried, hurling herself into Mark’s arms.

He sighed and put his arms around her and comforted her while she cried.  As he held her, he said, “There, there, you messed up.  But I still love you and I always will.”

Maddie nodded, and clung to Mark, still crying.  “Deidre will never talk to me again.”

“Oh, I think she will forgive you, in time.  But if she doesn’t, that is up to her.”

When Maddie had recovered a bit, she sniffled and stood up.  She looked into Mark’s face and asked, “You’re gonna spank me hard, aren’t you, sir?”

“Yes, I am.”

Maddie gulped but she knew she deserved it.

As if reading her thoughts, Mark said, “You deserve a good paddling, don’t you, Maddie?”

“Yes, sir.”

Mark placed a pillow on the end of the bed.  “Bend over, Madison Rose,” he said, knowing she hadn’t had time to slip on panties under her shirt.  He pulled the edge of her t-shirt up and put one hand lightly on her waist.  With the other hand, he raised the brush and brought it down hard on her bottom.

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Maddie jumped at the full force of the hairbrush.  Owwwwwwwwwwwwww!” she screamed.

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} “You will {WHACKK!}  respect {WHACKK!} other people's {WHACKK!}  confidences.” {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Owwwwwwwwwww, Mark!”

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

“You will not {WHACKK!} engage in gossip.

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

You will think {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} before {WHACKK!} you speak.” {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Maddie listened to Mark’s words and nodded.  She continued to cry.  Owww yesssssssssir!”

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

“And above all {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

you will never {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

try to {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

deceive me. {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Is that clear?” {WHACKK!}

{WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Maddie was openly sobbing.  “Yes, sir, I’m sorrrrrrrrrrrrry!”

“I don't ever {WHACKK!}

want to have {WHACKK!}

to discuss this kind of thing {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

with you again.” {WHACKK!} {WHACKK!}

Maddie didn’t know what else to say.  “Yes, sirrrrrrrr!” she cried.  She felt as though her bottom was on fire.

Mark put the brush down.  “If I’ve made that clear, then your spanking is over.”

Maddie sobbed as she stood up.  She rubbed and danced around for a few minutes.  Mark watched her and said quietly, “Corner.”

“Yes, sir.”  Maddie obediently walked to the corner.  She was grateful that Mark had allowed her to rub at all.

After fifteen minutes, Mark called Maddie out.  He opened his arms for a big hug.  “I forgive you, Maddie.”

Maddie held onto Mark as though she would float away.  “Mark? How come you always forgive me after I’ve let you down?”

“Because I love you, Maddie.”

“I love you too, Mark.”

The End.
