GARV MIGHT BE SHIFTED AHEAD- indiafm: December 18, 2003

There's a strong possibility that the Salman-Arbaaz-Shilpa starrer GARV – PRIDE & HONOUR may be shifted to April, although the makers [Cinevistaas] are working round-the-clock to release the film in January 2004.

Although the
film is complete, the makers are planning to add a song to the film, which may push the film forward. “When we saw the final edit, we realised that the second half has just one song. There was scope for another song, so we decided to record the track and film it on Salman and Shilpa,” actor turned director Puneet Issar tells me.

But adding a song shouldn't take much
time. That surely can't be the cause for the delay.Right you are! But we don't know how much time the post-production might take. Hopefully, we should be ready by January-end, but if things aren't completed by mid-February, we'll hold back the film and release it in April,” he adds.

The reason for not releasing the film in February and March is attributed to the examination period and the impact it has on the overall business of films.

MATRIX TECHNOLOGY IN 'MSK'- Indiafm: December 10, 2003

Sajid Nadiadwala has specially imported hi-tech motion control machines from Hollywood for his upcoming Salman Khan - Akshay Kumar starrer "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi" to be directed by David Dhawan. This is for the first time that these machines would be used in a Bollywood movie for executing action sequences similar to those, witnessed in the Hollywood superhits like 'Matrix'.

Commented an enthusiastic looking Akshay Kumar  "I am trying to understand what the whole thing is. Now I realize that things they have done in Matrix, like the scene in which 60 persons who were looking the same and attacking Keanu Reeves took about 90 days to shoot. This kind of technology coming in India will be a great thing and let's see how successful we can be as this is the first time it's going to happen over here between me and Salman."

A whopping 1.5 crores will be spent for the picturization of this 4 minute sequence in the film.

A SECRET - Filmfare: November 11, 2003

Trust us, Salman Khan won’t like his best kept secret revealed, but we felt otherwise about that. When it’s a good deed, it has to be spoken of, we figure. And that’s exactly the reason we are leaking this info… We always knew about Salman’s charities, but not this one, till we were told by a source close to him. It seems that once in two months the star takes out time from his busy schedule to donate bone marrow to children suffering from cancer at the Tata Memorial Hospital. While other stars go around beating drums to announce their charity work, Salman likes to keep mum. He believes that action speaks louder than words!

NO DECEMBER MARRIAGE- Indiafm: November 01, 2003

Besides this or that star doing some mythic Hollywood project or the other, the biggest joke flying around in Mumbai is Salman Khan’s illusory December marriage to the lovely Katrina Kaif.
Not only have the magazines chosen the month they’ve gone trousseau hunting on the couple’s behalf. But here’s the bottom line: this Khan ain’t tying the knot in the near future. Ask him about the supposed December marriage, and Salman laughs so loud you end up feeling foolish.
Right now Salman is in the best of spirits. And no pun intended. Ever since he returned from Boney Kapoor’s No Entry in Capetown, Salman has cut down drastically on his drinks .
That’s what Boney’s films do: they have a sobering effect on those involved. As his Bajirao Mastani co-star Kareena puts it, "He’s looking smashing. Salman is like a lion straining at the cage. He goes through these phases when he doesn’t care a damn about anything. Right now it’s payback time and he’s going to sweep all the competition under the carpet."

TIE ME UP- Mid-day: October 30, 2003

Salman KhanFor a fashion show that focussed on neckties, there were surprisingly few men sporting ties in the audience. Not surprising then that the Satya Paul line stood out at The Taj poolside last night, also of course because it’s quite a pleasingly eclectic collection, based on the works of artists from around the world.

Called Cultural ties, the show had 23 Mumbai-based artists, actors, industrialists and other successful men walking down a red carpet around the pool.

Starting an hour and a half late, it was well worth the wait. The men did a great job — wearing suits, ties and their attitudes — while their wives (and in the case of Aarti and Kailash Surendranath, even their kids) cheered on. Juhi Chawla carried a handycam and tracked hubby Jay Mehta’s confident saunter. Reena Kallat smiled as artist hubby Jitish came under the spotlight.

Backstage, a coterie surrounded star attraction Salman Khan (who modelled a Rs 1 crore diamond studded tie by Ishis) while he complained about how hot it was and debated whether to walk out with or without a jacket. Our recommendation: he should have dumped the jacket and the shirt. Bare-chested with just a super-expensive tie would have been fun.

POLICE DIWALI CONCERT 2003 - Mid-day: October 25, 2003

This mega-entertainment event also saw many Bollywood artistes like Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Dharmendra, Fardeen and Feroze Khan.

Producer Keshu also took this star-studded opportunity to launch the music of his forthcoming film, Khakhee.

With the exception of Ajay Devgan, the entire team of Khakhee, actors Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, director Rajkumar Santoshi and composer Ram Sampat were present for the occasion.

PERIOD DRAMA ! - Indiafm: October 18, 2003

Content with the initial response to BAGHBAN, Ravi Chopra has repeated Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan in his next film, a period drama. The duo will again essay father and son on screen. “It is a fiercely patriotic film, made with a purpose of propagating the message that love for one's country is the most supreme of all loves,” says Chopra, adding, “Set in 1857, it is essentially a father-son conflict on ideological differences.”

Chopra further adds that he is looking at modeling this saga on the lines of Hollywood war epics. Enlighten the celebrated film-maker about a film being attempted on a similar subject [Ketan Mehta's THE RISING] and he shrugs it aside saying, “Our film is set during those times, but it is not about Mangal Pandey. In fact, it is actually a fictionalized account, but mind you, it will be close to reality.”

Having started the research work six months ago, Chopra is giving finishing touches to the script to enable it to go on the floors by early next year.

NEW FANS - HT: October 08, 2003

Overheard at a preview show: Neetu Singh telling Salman Khan that he had fans who swore by him in her family. “My mom adores you, so do I. And my daughter, Ridhima, is a great fan of yours,” Rishi Kapoor’s elegant wife told Salman who was visibly embarrassed with the compliment and stood there blushing. But Neetu continued, “In our house, the fondness for you spans three generations. It’s just Jai Salman.”

BANDRA'S BLUE EYED BOY - B4U: October 08, 2003

Govinda may be the Hero No.1, but in reality it is Salman Khan who has the maximum fans at least in his area in Bandra. From panwallahs to rickshawallah's and from discos to boutiques, almost all and sundry have praises for the Khan. One rickshawallah even said, "Salman Khan is the best thing to happen to Bandra. It is my life ambition to meet him once. And mind you I'm not alone. All the people whom I know want to meet Salman Khan, mainly because he has been extremely good to them."

BOOK REVIEW - Sify & IBD: October 06, 2003

At a time when communal harmony seems to be at its lowest ebb, it is most heartening to learn that at least Bollywood has a different message to give. Not in the films itSalman Khan produces with breath-taking abandon. Not in the scripts it presents in ritualistic regularity. But, believe it or not, in the happy lives that its stars live in unsung glory. Read More @ sify.com

Editorial Review : I have three simple rectins of "Colas, Cars & communal Harmony". As a proud member of the Hindi film industry, it is heartening and rare to come across such an excellent documentation of secularism which showcases a ture and positive aspect of the cinema world. As a politician with staunch secular views, a book that talks of happy convergence of religions, not a coercion or conversion, is a reaffirmation of my own belliefs. Finally as a reader, I am immensely surprised that a socially relevant and difficult topic has benn handled by the author in such a racy, informative and readable style.

COSTUME DRAMA - Filmfare: October 06, 2003

The Chopras are so maha thrilled with both Amitabh and Salman that they didn’t even wait for the verdict of their latest film, ‘Baghban’, before announcing to the world their next film with the dynamic duo. Made under the banner of B.R Films, their next Amitabh and Salman starrer will be a period costume drama, set against the background of British rule. And it will be directed by Ravi Chopra, with music by Adesh Shrivastava. The Chopras will also be launching another film soon, they say. Seems like the clan is in a tearing hurry!

IMAGE CHANGE - Filmfare: October 06, 2003

Call it an exercise in public relations or whatever. The bad boy of Bollywood is desperate to change his bratty image. To start off, Salman Khan has decided to complete two films in just four months flat. The first is Sajid Nadiadwala's comedy, being directed by David Dhawan. It also co-stars Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. The other, Salman is doing for his brother-in-law, Atul Agnihorti, and co-stars with Bhumika Chawla and Preity Zinta. Shooting for both the films are going on at a brisk pace and they will be completed within four months. We wait to see how long Sallu continues with that discipline and image!

UNITED COLORS - HT: October 06, 2003

If you thought star hunks Vivek Oberoi and Salman Khan have only a love interest in common, then, read on. And no, their favourite colour is not green.
Salman KhanVivek Oberoi
Last week, at Karisma's wedding, you could not have missed him in a dapper, two-tone shirt with a huge neck, offering a sizeable glimpse of the chest. That's Vivek Oberoi we are talking about, one of the star sightings at the glittering do.

Fast forward to Friday, the day of two big releases -- Baghban and Khel. In Baghban, Salman Khan wears the same shirt, while in Khel, it's Suniel Shetty who dons the mantle. If you haven't seen the films, check out the promos running on TV closely.

Salman Khan's wardrobe in Baghban has been done by his favourite designer, Vikram Phadnis. The designer has done clothes for an enviable line-up that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar, Akshay Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu, among others.
Phadnis says he sourced the material for the bark and mocha coloured shirt from one of his suppliers. "I did the shirt last year. I have no clue where other stars got their pieces from," he says amusedly.
Bollywood has for long been setting fashion trends for the masses, but often stars themselves pick up the look from the same stylists. Take Aalim Hakim, for instance. The most feted hairstylist in the industry is doing to men what designer Manish Malhotra did to women several years back – give them a makeover.
Malhotra was singularly responsible for making style synonymous with Bollywood heroines, who dressed in rags for most of the eighties. Karisma Kapoor (Raja Hindustani), Urmila Matondkar (Rangeela) and Raveena Tandon (Rakshak) have a lot to thank Malhotra for.
Hakim is behind some of the snazziest hair-dos of Bollywood hunks. Ajay Devgan (Qayamat, Bhoot, Khakee), Salman Khan (Baghban), Sanjay Dutt (Rudraksh, Plan), Anil Kapoor (Allwyn Kalicharan), Mahesh Manjrekar (Padam Shree Laloo Yadav) have sported his hairstyles in recent films.
As long as they look different, no one's complaining.

ALL PRAISE - Screen: October 05, 2003

Salman Khan & Ravi ChopraThe Chopras are also all praise for Salman who has underplayed the role of Alok beautifully. It’s a performance from the heart. Salman is a “heart” person himself... spontaneous and impulsive, they point out. They had never worked with him before but they insist he was was amazing from day one.
After his altercation with Vivek Oberoi, Salman took off to London for the Baghban schedule. Did he carry the tension on to the sets? “No, he was unbelievably good,” says Renu and informs that he took a 15-hour flight to London and almost immediately reported for work. “He would come an hour late, by 11 a.m. but once he was there, his time was our time till pack-up was announced. He even ate with the unit, and every evening, during those 10 days, would insist that we join him for dinner and drinks even though Ravi would grumble that unlike him he had to start work at 7 a.m. He had come with his own people but he insisted that they be billed separately. Sometimes we wondered who was the producer. We or he?” Renu smiles.
Salman admits that he identified with the character completely. “Baghban is a film on Hindustan culture. It’s about parents who have gone through a lot of struggle, who take care of you all your life. Each time you cry, they cry with you. Each time you hurt, they hurt with you. Yet, there are times when money, greed, insecurity are a lot stronger than blood. That should never happen. Never!” he says emotionally.

AMITABH-SALMAN - Filmfare: October 03, 2003

After having worked together in ‘Baghban’, this duo has formed an MAS (Mutual Admiration Society). While Amitabh seems to have got along fabulously well with the actor he calls “the coolest kid”, Salman can’t stop talking about his legendary co-star. The two have been signed for Ravi Chopra’s next film, or so we hear. Well, they sure seem to have become one helluva close-knit family, wot say?

MAHIMA SAYS - Filmfare: October 03, 2003

“My first interaction with Salman was when I was on my first world tour. At that time I had a few hiccups in the industry and he came and gave me a little talk. I learnt. I got up and started walking again. That’s my first impression of Salman. He’s very courteous. When he’s around I feel more confident that I’ll be taken care of. He’s such a gentleman. It’s sad that people have a certain impression of him which he doesn’t take the trouble to clear out.”

SALMAN & KATRINA? - bollyvista: October 03, 2003
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif might deny each other and claim that they're just good friends, but the fact remains that the two are very much an item. In fact, Katrina is seen in Salman's company almost regularly, and at his abode in Bandra too. We hear that recently when Katrina's sister, Melissa, was down from London to meet her, she was put up at Salman's!

FROM ASHES TO HOPE - Filmfare: October, 2003

Actor Atul Agnihotri, with an additional claim to fame as the husband of Salman Khan’s younger sister Alvira, has been waiting to make his directorial debut for a while now. First Atul had wanted to re-make Pearl Harbour with brother-in-law Salman and his ex-gal Aishwarya Rai. When he couldn’t get the necessary crores for this love story, Atul decided instead to be inspired by Return To Me, a low-budget, mushy love story. Once again, he approached Salman and Ash. Anything for family, said Sallu, but Ash laughed his idea away, saying, ‘No, it won’t work.’ So Atul’s now got Preity Zinta stepping into Ash’s shoes. And after the success of Tere Naam, Salman Khan is confident this love story will also click. Yup, even minus Ash.

DRIVING MR. KHAN - Filmfare: October, 2003

Ever since that unfortunate car accident in Mumbai, Salman Khan has stopped driving his car. Father Salim Khan has given him very strict instructions to steer clear of the wheel.
So guess what apna Sallu did? He cycled all the way to Bhandup, which is a distant Mumbai suburb, for the Press-Meet for his last release, Tere Naam. Only problem was Salman reached the location at two in the afternoon for a string of interviews that was supposed to start at 9 a.m. And hurriedly left mid-way through his interviews saying, ‘Sorry guys, but I’ve got to get home on time.’
Salman also reached late for a private preview of the same film which he had organised for political heavyweight Narayan Rane. But he called Rane Saheb and explained, ‘Sir, I’m late because my driver has been instructed by my dad to drive really slow. We don’t want another hit-and-run case on our hands.

STEALS THE SHOW - Filmfare: October, 2003

Bharathi S Pradhan, veteran film journalist and editor of Movie International, released her book, Colas, Cars & Communal Harmony, a tribute to the secular colours of the Hindi film industry, at a heart-warming function on the eve of Independence Day. The book has interviews with, among others, superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. In fact the cover features Salman cuddling his two nephews—brother Arbaaz and Malaika’s baby and brother Sohail and Seema’s kid. So the Khan parivar was there in full force as were Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Mahesh Bhatt, Sanjay Khan, Jackie Shroff, Rati Agnihotri and Raveena Tandon, who read out a few paragraphs.
Mahesh Bhatt and Sanjay Khan made enlightening speeches but the evening easily belonged to Salman, who made a warm speech on Hindu-Muslim bhai-bhai and ended by saying,
“I don’t know where I will live for the rest of my life. ’Cos you never know where life takes you. But I wish to close my eyes only in India because I’m proud to be an Indian and want to die here.”

Salman Khan arrives at the wedding. Before the star even realizes what is happening, he is embraced by a man wearing a white driver's uniform. Khan is too stunned to do anything but hug him back. Then, he puts his hand on the man's shoulder and moves towards the gate of the cottage. By which time the police swing into action. They grab the man in the driver's uniform and drag him away as Khan enters the gate.

Biwi No 1 , Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge and Chal Mere Bhai co-star Salman Khan is not a familiar figure at showbiz nuptials. Salman brought his little adopted sister, Arpita (partly seen), to the wedding.

LOYALISTS -sify: September 29, 2003

Salman KhanWhile the media continues its crusade against Salman Khan, the same media's favorite whipping boy's loyalists keep on increasing each passing day. At a recent haute couture show, close friend and noted designer Vikram Phadnis publicly acknowledged that Salman is his godfather. "It is because of him that I am standing here and talking to you." Riding high on the success of the recent Tere Naam , Salman, who was supposed to unveil Phadnis' clothes collection said, “Vikram is a nice guy. Whatever he designs for me, I wear it. Otherwise, I am very fussy about the kind of clothes I wear." Now this is something against Salman's popular image

REPETITION? - Indiafm: September 27, 2003
While BAGHBAN is scheduled for release next week, B.R. Chopra has decided to repeat Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan in his new film, to be directed by Ravi Chopra. Aadesh Shrivasatava will score the music

HAIR RAISER - HT: September 22, 2003

Bollywood hunk Salman Khan is not half the man-e we thought he was. Surprised? The actor's funky new hairstyle in 'Tere Naam' may be a last ditch effort to stem the tide of falling follicles.
"I would hate to be bald but unfortunately it's something I can't help', says Khan while admitting that has found the perfect 'cover-up' for his receding hairline. So elated is Sallu baba with the success of his startling new look in 'Tere Naam' , that he has decided to sport a different coiffure for each of his forthcoming films.
According to him: "It's true that I am balding. And while I hate wearing wigs in real life, I may have to do so on screen to keep up a youthful appearance. In fact it may not turn out to be such a bad thing after all - I experimented with my hairstyle in 'Tere Naam' an much to my own surprise, it has become a craze among youngsters."
Tinsletown's enfant terrible is not alone in seeing the potential of a 'happening' hairdo. "A number of my directors and other well-wishers want me to keep reinventing myself. The look for 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' , my next film with David Dhawan, for example is very different from anything else I have attempted so far. And I will be selecting a new hairstyle for my subsequent project too, although I can't talk about that now", he says.
But Salman hasn't given up hopes of arresting the fall. At least not yet. Wigs, he insists, are strictly for screen appearances. "Hey, my hair is thinning but I haven't gone bald! I don't mind looking my age when the time comes in ten years or so but till then I am going to try every trick in the book to make sure my hair stays the way it is."

MEET SALMAN - HT: September 18, 2003

Bollywood's Pocket Hercules Salman Khan never ceases to surprise. When the media devoted valuable space to his capers off the sets, he studiously maintained silence. His latest release Tere Naam was an above average grosser while ex-flame Aishwarya Rai's Kuch Naa Kaho came a cropper. But Salman wasn't dishing out interviews. And when you least expect it, there he is – rippling biceps and shaking a leg with model Divya in a T Series music video, Tera mera dil . The number is choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant and composed by friend Himesh Reshammiya, and is “the surprise element in Ravi Chopra's Baghban ”.

Says Salman: “The music video was a one-off affair because Himesh requested me to do it.” Recently he did a special appearance in friend Raveena Tandon's Stumped and in Baghban he essays the role of Amitabh Bachchan's foster son. “It makes sense to do one-song appearances and special roles rather than an inconsequential starring role,” he points out.

Salman, who's contemplating a new hairstyle for his forthcoming film, Lucky, points out: “An actor should always experiment with his looks in keeping with the character. I also sported blue streaks recently for a show.”
Off-screen, he devotes time to daily workouts, eats healthy food, spends time with underprivileged children and donates to charities. His mantra in life: “I never talk about my personal life because it's not important. I'm a man with his heart in the right place and am serious about work. Beyond that I'm a very boring person, whose life doesn't have half the thrills as people imagine.”

HAIR STYLES- Indiafm: September 17, 2003

He's responsible for the spiked-look-with-silver-streaks of Sanjay Dutt in PLAN. And the brand new look of Ajay Devgan in QAYAMAT and BHOOT. Aalim Hakim, the man behind the revamped looks of most of our top stars, is now giving a new look to Salman Khan in his next two films - MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI and LUCKY.
If you saw Salman go bald for the role in TERE NAAM, in MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, the actor is sporting a different hair style, with his hair falling on one side of his forehead.
The hairstyle in LUCKY is going to be quite different from the ones Salman has sported so far. In this film, the actor is going to have hair fall all over his forehead, a la Enrique Iglesias.

FASHION SHOW - Mid-day: September 16, 2003 NEW

Pandemonium reigned at designer Vikram Phadnis's show at the Hyatt Regency on Saturday evening as over a thousand people thronged the ballroom, which had a seating capacity of 550. Actress Zeenat Aman nearly got knocked over while entering the hall as people rushed towards the door to find a good seat.
And if that was not enough, Zeenie baby had to stand for nearly twenty minutes before a chair was arranged for her in the front row — and she was one of the chief guests.
When the show eventually kicked off, Yukta Mookhey walked on stage and announced that the sponsors (Dhoot Entertainment) were giving out awards to five professionals who had made a difference to the fashion and film industry. Great idea that was, except that someone had forgotten to keep the awards ready. So when Dilip Kumar and Saira Banoo (also special guests) were supposed to present Mickey Contractor with a bouquet for his twenty-five year stint as make-up artist, Yukta's pleas to bring out the floral arrangement fell on deaf ears.
Not letting the opportunity slip by, actor Shekhar Suman made it a point to ridicule this faux pas when he was invited on stage to present an award to Priyanka Chopra. Needless to say, the crowd cheered him on, as also they did when Govinda was on stage later and said that he could hardly comment on fashion especially since his flamboyant style of dressing has always garnered much criticism. Ironically though, Govinda chose to show up at this event in a dapper grey suit, matching tie et al, looking rather nice.
In fact, some of the garments that were modelled after the ‘awards ceremony' might well have been inspired by Govinda's filmi fashions. While we loved the western cuts and the saree innovations, a few of the bridal creations were garish and frightening as the colour schemes clashed and the embroidery left much to be desired.
However, the crowd went wild when Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan took to the ramp as the showstopper. For any star-struck voyeur, this was the place to be for not only was Salman on the ramp but in the front row were Rani Mukerji, Urmila Matondkar, Sohail Khan, Mahima Chaudhary, Sangeeta Bijlani and Mohammad Azharuddin.
And if you must know, the show was followed by a party at Zaha at The Leela, where many of the same people were seen partying the night away.

Salman & Sangeeta
Salman Khan and Sangeeta Bijlani locked in a warm embrace during the Vikram Phadnis fashion show at Hyatt Regency on Saturday night. Sangeeta's hubbie Azharuddin was present too.

SALMAN ON MUJSHE SHAADI KAROGI - sify: September 10, 2003

Actor Salman Khan believes in living life on his own terms and prefers to keep his personal life out of the limelight.
Talking to reporters after the 'muhurat' of his latest film Mujhse Shadi Karoge at Filmistan studios in Goregaon, North Mumbai, Salman said whether it was his choice of films or personal life, he follows the dictates of his heart.
The actor refused to be drawn into conversation about the recent happenings in his personal life and said he does not like interference. Asked whether he had popped the question, Mujhse Shadi Karoge to anybody in real life, he said it was a private matter.
Salman said he never ponders over the fate of any of his films at the box office or opinion of critics regarding the film or his performance, but his aim is to concentrate on his performance and deliver the best.
Mujhse Shadi Karoge is a romantic flick, not an out-and-out comedy, said producer Sajid Nadiadwala.
Salman had also worked with the director of the movie David Dhavan in films like Judwa, Biwi No 1 and Chal Mere Bhai. Mujhse Shadi Karoge also stars Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra.
The film will have "Time Splash" special effects which use 80 cameras at a time. This technique was used for the first time in Hollywood's Matrix.

MUJSHE SHAADI KAROGI - Mid-day: September 10, 2003

Salman, Priyanka, Akshay“It’s all about love, romance and other natural disasters,” said Sajid Khan about producer Sajid Nadiadwala’s new film Mujhse Shadi Karogi, at its launch at Filmistan Studios yesterday.
The unusual combination cast of Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra cut what Sajid called the ‘cake of success’ to inaugurate the film. The two-tier cake actually toppled while it was being cut, but with their respective recent hits — Tere Naam and AndaazSalman, Akshay and Priyanka looked as if they’d already tasted success.
If you are wondering why anyone would cast two action heroes in a romantic film, director David Dhawan is quick to reply: “They look so good together. They were our first choice.”
When Nadiadwala first decided to work on the film, he called Salman Khan. The next call was to old school friend Akshay Kumar. “I have cast combinations like Akshay Kumar-Sunil Shetty in Waqt Hamara Hai, Salman-Sunny Deol in Jeet or even Salman in a double role before,” he explains.
The mahurat was held on a portion of the set where Salman’s introductory shot was to be filmed. Some 30 cameras were laid out for the occasion.
Nadiadwala’s trio took centrestage at the mahurat, and he hopes they will at the box office too. And wishing him well on the occasion were Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta, Karan Johar, Farah Khan (who’s the choreographer for the film), Atul Agnihotri, Puneet Issar, Ayub Khan and others.

NOBLE DEEDS - IndiaTimes September 04, 2003

While the media is ready to corner Salman Khan and put him under public scrutiny, his good deeds seem to escape general notice. For instance, we have this noble gesture to share with you guys: Last week, senior actor Ajit Vachani urgently required blood and he SMSed all his filmi friends from his hospital bed. One such message came to Salman’s phone. And, guess what? Instead of passing on the message to others or replying to it, Salman rushed to the hospital to donate his blood. But before he could reach there, Ajit passed away. Not many know that somewhere inside the rough and tough image there’s a noble soul!

BAGHBAN MUSIC - IndiaTimes August 28, 2003

AN EQUAL MUSIC - IndiaTimes August 28, 2003

Hema & JayaIt was a party that did Mumbai proud. Last night the music of the movie Baghban, directed by Ravi Chopra under the BR Chopra Banner, had a glittering launch at the Grand Intercontinental last night. Baghban - which means gardener — has three tracks sung by the Big B himself.
In his speech Amitabh Bachchan introduced co-star Hema Malini, who looked ravishing in a spaghetti top, as Esha Deol’s younger sister to an appreciative audience. He said the movie, a family entertainer, would be a refreshing change from the current crop of thriller and horror flicks. Amitabh also went on to declare his support to Salman Khan and said he envied the younger man’s cool temperament. Hema Malini spoke of the rejuvenated chemistry between her and Amitabh, which had made the last 20 years simply melt away.
The launch was widely attended by the cast, which also includes Suman Ranganathan, Arzoo Govitrikar, Samir Soni and Sahil Chadha and music director Aadesh Srivastava. Missing in action were Mahima Choudhary, who is in the US, Rimi Sen and Divya Dutta. The party was also attended by Jaya Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Ramesh Sippy, Moushami Chatterji and Raj Babbar. MUSIC LAUNCHED -Indiafm: August 28, 2003

The invitation came in the form of a bonsai plant. An invitation with a difference!
The party to celebrate the music launch of B.R. Chopra's BAGHBAN, directed by Ravi Chopra, on Wednesday, August 27 at Hotel Intercontinental The Grand, Sahar, wasSalman & Amitabh an equally different affair.
The Chopra brothers, B.R. and Yash, shared the podium after a very long time. Amitabh and Hema Malini, who were working with each other after almost twenty years, were on the dais, talking about their experiences while working in the film. Ditto for Amitabh and director Ravi Chopra, who were working together after ZAMEER [1974], after almost two decades. Amitabh and Salman, who have been teamed for the first time for a film, showered compliments on each other...
Before B.R. Chopra officially launched the music of the film, an audio-visual presentation highlighting important moments from the film were screened for the select invitees.
Like always, it was the Big B who stole the march with his short-n-sweet speech, while speaking about BAGHBAN. Some gems: "Meet Esha Deol's younger sister -- Hema Malini. When I look at her, mujhe sharm-si aa jaati hain. She's growing younger with each passing day. And here we are. Look at us!
"I wish I was as cool as Salman in real life. Whatever people have to say about Salman, in my opinion he's a gem of a person with a heart of gold. Very sensitive. Very emotional. I'm always with you Salman.
"Working with Ravi Chopra for BAGHBAN was an enjoyable experience. There has been a tremendous growth in him as a director."
While talking about the film, Salman did drop a hint about its storyline. "I completely identify with the character I am portraying in this film. I am like this at home. Cool… In real life, I only hope we don't behave like the children in this film," he smiled.
The august gathering included veterans Sunil Dutt and Shashikala, Ashok Hinduja, Manmohan Shetty, Shyam and Balkrishna Shroff, Raj Babbar with son Arya and daughter Juhi, Overseas distributor Sanjay Jumani, Mukesh Desai [T-Series], singers Nitin Mukesh, Udit Narayan, Sudesh Bhosle... and hand-picked media persons.
Mrs. Ravi Chopra was personally looking after the guests at this classy affair. BAGHBAN has music by Aadesh Shrivastava and lyrics by Sameer. Super Cassettes Industries Ltd. is marketing the music of the film.

PROMOTE TERE NAAM & FASHION -IANS: August 25 2003
It will be a double bill for Bollywood star Salman Khan in Johannesburg this week, promoting India's leading fashion designers as well as his new film Tere Naam.
The Indian designers will feature at the South African Fashion Week, the country's premiere fashion event, to be held from August 27-30 but Salman will not be opting for his traditional chest-baring role as in his films.
He will only speak at the forum and attend a gala dinner where he will draw the winner of a competition in which one of the expected 1,000 guests will win two tickets for a trip to India.
Salman's appearance here is also expected to give added impetus to his latest movie Tere Naam, which is playing to capacity houses across South Africa since opening two Friday's ago.
Although not all the designers will be present themselves, the work of almost all top designers will be modelled in a show put together by model and actor Milind Soman for South African promoters.
One designer who has confirmed her attendance is Neeta Lulla, who designed the stunning outfits for the film Devdas last year. She will be auctioning two of the outfits worn by the leading ladies in the film, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
Malaika Arora, Salman's sister-in-law, is the compere for the evening and will also perform some dance items. She will be joined by playback singer Babul Supriyo and six dancers from Mumbai.
"It started when we were in India and were offered Milind's film Rules - Pyar Ka Superhit Formula for our company Tip Top Entertainment," organiser Sugen Nair told IANS.
"We took the movie on condition that Milind and the cast come and do a fashion show here to help promote the movie. He is getting outfits from the top designers to be modelled by the cast of the film."
Nair said the original plan was to host the premiere of Rules... and then have the fashion show afterwards but this was not possible because the release of the movie had been postponed by a week.
"But it's not just about the fashion show and Salman's attendance, although these are certainly highlights," Nair added.
"It will be an unprecedented celebration of Indian couture and lifestyle that will help usher in an exciting international dimension into South Africa's fashion industry. The fusion of Indian designers' authentic style on vibrant Indian fabric meeting Western designs brings in an eclectic mix to fashion houses all over the world, and are making Indian designers more and more popular," said Nair.
"As this year marks the 10th anniversary of resumed trade relations between South Africa and India, we are proud that we can commemorate this at South African Fashion Week," Nair concluded.

ROCKING AGAIN - Indian Express: August 21, 2003

Bet you didn’t know that Salman Khan had a lucky charm for his just released Tere Naam! It’s a gold chain from a background dancer, Santosh, which he wore throughout the film. Going by the good initial the film has got, the charm seems to have worked. Khan is obviously delighted. ‘‘I am God’s favourite child and these little things always work... at least for me,’’ he says.
The actor looks upbeat. ‘‘I am grooving and rocking once again,’’ he says in a rare interview-eager mood. We take advantage with some questions, and Salman being Salman answered them in this own style. ‘‘I’ve realised that there’s more to life than movies but I don’t know what it is,” he says. “But I will do something for my fans.’’ And fans he still seems to have in plenty, despite the frequent anti-Salman tides that keep rising.
With all his history, does he feel the need to tell his side of the story? An autobiography? ‘‘It’s too soon for that. I will write it someday though not right now. When you give your point of view, then you put someone down. I don’t want to do that now,’’ says Khan.
That’s quite a philosophy. Does he have any more of these nuggets? ‘‘Three of them _In life, go straight and turn right; Live today, keeping yesterday in mind; Try not to be human because they make many mistakes.’’ Let the fundas pass and what’s in the future? The actor admitted that he would like to direct a film one day. ‘‘It’ll be something like the films made by Sooraj Barjatya, which make the audience say, ‘Oh, my God, that’s so sweet’ and they wipe a tear. I would like to give my audience khushi ke aansoo,’’ he says.
Since he alternates almost every reply with answering calls on his cell-phone, we ask him who would he make his last phone call to. Call it black humour on our part or on his, but he replies, ‘‘That will be the time to call the press. I’ll tell them to ask away and I promise to answer all.

GARV OR SATYAMEV JAYATE ?- Indiafm: August 19, 2003
With TERE NAAM opening to a fabulous response throughout India, all eyes are now focused on Salman Khan's next release, Cinevistaas' new venture, being directed by actor Punit Issar.

Currently 90% complete, the makers are looking at a December 2003 release. “Only 15 days' work is pending to wrap up the entire shooting, after which we begin the post-production work of the film," Punit tells me.

But the 'samasya' is that the makers have yet to decide on an appropriate title for the film. At a point of time, they were planning to call it SANGHAAR, but they're now vacillating between two titles -- GARV: PRIDE & HONOUR and SATYAMEV JAYATE. "The second title is not with us, but we may get it," Punit divulges.

Let's see what title the makers eventually settle for!

OVERWHELMING RESPONSE !- HINDUSTAN TIMES: August 17, 2003

Salman Khan
Jeetendra congratulates Salman Khan for his riveting performance

As the Salman Khan-starrer Tere Naam opened to packed houses all over, HT City and DT Cinemas celebrated the occasion on Friday evening at ITC Maurya Sheraton’s Kamal Mahal. Star-struck Salman fans caught a glimpse of their favorite hero as well as got an opportunity to interact with him at the do.
Most of the swish set that turned out at the gala had missed out on the special screening of the film organized by DT cinemas earlier in the day but planned to catch it soon. “I haven’t seen the film but I am here specially for Salman,” said Pratibha Advani. Echoing her view was MP, Rajeev Shukla: “The last movie I checked out was Koi… Mil Gaya and Tere Naam is surely next on my ‘things to do’ list!”
Those who had attended the screening earlier in the day couldn’t stop raving about how well an intricate web of emotions had been spun in the story. “The portrayal of emotions is beautiful,” remarked Neelam Rudy, wife of Civil Aviation Minister, Rajiv Pratap Singh Rudy.
Denying rumors that the story of the film was inspired by his own life, Salman joked: “It’s actually the true love story of Gautam Kumar (who presents the film).” Looking happy with the initial response that the film has garnered was Bollywood debutante Bhoomika Chawla who stars in Tere Naam opposite Salman. Of course, she may be Salman’s obsession in the film, but Bhoomika stumped all (Salman included, of course) by addressing him as “Salman Bhai”. With her head firmly on her shoulders, Chawla is choosing her roles with caution: “Right now, I am doing Run but I am looking forward to doing some different roles, not the same old run-of-the-mill characters.”
Satish Kaushik, director of Tere Naam, moves away from his characteristic slapstick (Badhai Ho Badhai) or family melodrama (Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai) to more realistic yet commercial filmmaking with this film. “This is way beyond my personality, but continuing in this genre I will soon be staging a play, Salesman Ramlal,” he informs.
Producer Sunil Manchanda is already laughing his way to the bank, “with the opening weekend being booked to capacity. I can’t even imagine what history this film will create,” he said.

HUMOROUS - IndiaTimes August 16, 2003

Salman KhanIt was megawatt star power at the Sun-n-Sand hotel on Thursday, Independence Day Eve. The occasion was the launch of Bharathi S Pradhan’s (Moviemag International editor) book called, ‘Cars, Colas and Communal Harmony’, celebrating the numerous inter-faith Bollywood marriages and doffing its hat to the industry’s secular colours. The evening had both style and substance.
The glitzy quota was fulfilled by the formidable star presence. Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Jackie Shroff, Arbaaz Khan, Malaika Arora, Amrita Arora, Sanjay Khan, Salim Khan with wives: Salma and Helen sitting next to each other, Raveena Tandon, compere Rati Agnihotri, Aditi Govitrikar... the list had luster.
Former super cop Julio Riberio spoke about how he was horrified to learn about the 1992-93 riots in Mumbai while he was in Romania as India’s ambassador to the country. Joint Commissioner of Police Javed Ahmed, impressive in uniform, took the dais to give his message: This Independence Day let us have freedom from our bias and prejudices.
Mahesh Bhatt roared, “Anybody who has lived through the fires of religious hatred knowns what it is. I have not said everything in the book, because there is only that much truth people can handle.” Model Aditi Govitrikar spoke about how she fell in love with her Muslim husband Muffazal, ironically when she was stranded in her hostel at Grant Medical College while communal riots raged outside.
Salman Khan said, “I am used to getting in trouble. I am going to do so again I think. Without me Javed saab (Javed Ahmed, he meant) would be out of work.” After the audience had recovered, Salman went on harking back to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, “We all come from monkeys. Monkeys have no religion.” He raised laughs at the sporting swipe he took at himself, “I learnt about God in the fifth standard. Incidentally, I had great difficulty in making it to the sixth standard. I am not a graduate. I might do my graduation when I am 60 or 70...” Finally, SK left the mike with, “I was born in Indore, brought up in Bombay, Bandra Bandstand. I opened my eyes in this country, I will shut them here.”
Akshay Kumar revealed that he has decided not to mouth anti-Pakistan dialogues in his projects. Saying ‘no’ to the India vs. Pakistan stand, Akshay said, it must be India with Pakistan vs. terrorism. The feel-good evening closed early by 8.30 pm. Tri-coloured orange, white and green soft did the rounds, giving greater resonance to Sanjay Khan’s message.
“The only flag that matters is the tricolour...

UNIQUE START! - Indiafm: August 16, 2003

He may be surrounded by controversies, but there's no denying the fact that when it comes to fan-following, Salman Khan's popularity chart is rock-steady. While his fans ensured that TERE NAAM generated excellent opening all over, one section of his fans in Jodhpur [Rajasthan] went one step ahead.
A big group of body builders booked the entire Balcony seats of Jodhpur's Nasrani cinema for the very first show of the film on Friday. The procession arrived in 4-5 open jeeps, many of them sporting Salman's hairstyle from the film. One of them was even seen in shackles, the kind of which the actor has worn in the second half of the film.
Not to be left behind, the management of the theatre also joined in the festive mood. They welcomed the procession and garlanded those sporting Salman's get-up.

KOI MIL GAYA! -Indiatimes : August 13, 2003

Remember how Hrithik had waxed eloquent about Salman Khan being the ideal Prem? “I know that I can’t surpass Salman Khan, who will remain the eternal Prem for Soorajji’s films. He is such a good hearted and sensitive human being. He exudes a certain charm about him that I feel is required to play a character like Prem,” he said during the promos of Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. And guess what, now it’s Salman’s turn to praise Hrithik.
Our macho hero, who is supposed to star in Sooraj Barjatiya’s next, is simply bowled over by Hrithik’s performance in Koi... Mil Gaya. “I quite liked him in MPKDH. If he has said all that about me, I’d ask everyone to watch him in KMG. I have watched the film and what a performance Hrithik has put up. He has put all of us to shame. If Bollywood actors can put in even 10 per cent of what Hrithik has done in KMG, it will be a great job done,” Salman said.
One wondered whether we were listening to sound bytes from a mutual admiration society. But no, Salman was quick to brush aside any claims of being modest. “I am just being truthful. When I say he has put all of us to shame I just don’t mean our generation of actors. I am also talking about stars of yesteryears!” he added. Now is Hrithik listening?

CROWD-PULLER! - Indiatimes : August 12, 2003

Salman Khan is back. This time with a bizarre hairdo in Tere Naam — Unfortunately A True Love Story which releases this Friday.
And no matter how much the public may have criticised him for the black bucks, the brawls over Aishwarya Rai and drunken driving, the advance booking of Tere Naam suggests that all is forgiven — and forgotten.
Theatres in Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad have reported full bookings for the weekend as soon as the box-office opened yesterday. All three weekend shows at Gaiety in Bandra, Maratha Mandir in Mumbai Central and Liberty in Marine Lines are running housefull.
A crowd of almost 400 had queued up at Liberty, while Maratha Mandir had 150 people asking for tickets yesterday. Bookings in New Delhi have almost paralleled Koi... Mil Gaya bookings.
Gushes Fernandes, manager at Liberty, “The response to Tere Naam has been excellent. But then right from Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Judwaa or Hum Saath Saath Hain... all Salman Khan films always run to packed houses in Liberty.”
This enthusiasm could be attributed to one single factor —Salman Khan. Khan hasn’t had a single release after the David Dhawan directed Yeh Hai Jalwa in July 2002.
Explains film trade analyst, Amod Mehra, “Salman will be appearing in an action tapori kind of role after a long, long time.” His last few releases, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge (April 2002), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (May 2002) and Yeh Hai Jalwa had Salman doing romantic roles.
Mehra also feels that after the Salman-Vivek Oberoi fracas, Salman’s image as a violent lover in Tere Naam is very similar to his now off-screen image.
Rumours about Tere Naam being Salman’s own love story, which it is not, are also adding to the appeal of the film. “People are curious to know what the film is about. That’s what pulling them to theatres,” says Mehra.
Another reason producer Mukesh Talreja cites for Tere Naam’s early popularity is its emotional plot.
Says Talreja, “The film is not just a lovey-dovey happy story. Paticularly after the interval, the film is very emotional. People are interested because of that.”
Whatever the reasons, one thing is certain. Salman Khan, the adorable sweetheart in Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Sanam and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, still remains a crowdpuller.

ADVANCE BOOKING! - Indiatimes : August 12, 2003

While Rakesh Roshan's sci-fi flick is running to packed theatres and Hrithik's outstanding performance as a mentally challenged lad is the most talked about thing in town, there's more muscle power that will be taking over the theatres this week. It's Satish Kaushik's Salman starrer, 'Tere Naam', where Sallu plays the role of an obsessive lover. According to trade reports and close monitoring of the booking counters at theatres, we've heard that 'Tere Naam' has received tremendous advance booking for the first week, and theatres in Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad were sold house full for the weekend as soon as the box-office opened yesterday. And for those who thought that Salman's filmi career was down and out - may we rest our case here?

COMFORTABLE! - Indiatimes : August 12, 2003

Don't destroy your life for one person. That, says Salman Khan, is the message of his latest film which releases Friday.
"Don't destroy your life for one person because there're lots of other people who love you a lot more, though may be not the same way," says Salman, who reportedly had a difficult time breaking his relationship with Aishwarya Rai.
When told that his role in "Tere Naam" seems tough, Salman strikes an ultra cool posture.
"What's so difficult about it? The wig? Though I hate get-ups, I wasn't uncomfortable wearing it because I'm comfortable with anything in life," he told IANS.
"I had to be long-haired in the first-half and go bald in the second-half. It's as simple as that," he drawls.
"Do you remember in school the teacher would taunt you, so that you cut your long hair? I play that small town hero with long hair. With the hair come the attitude and the intensity and romance. I play Radhe, the local hero."
Contrary to the images projected in the film's hard-hitting promos on television, Salman says he doesn't play an anti-social character in "Tere Naam".
"I'm not at all a thug in the film. I play a very correct person. Though I'm jobless, I'm a guys' guy who would do anything to protect family and friends."
Salman says his character's destiny changes after he meets a sweet simple girl played by newcomer Bhoomika Chawla.
"Destiny is the villain of the plot. Finally all the things that Radhe has done to support and protect his friends catch up with him. My character goes through great trauma. That's what happens when you lose faith in the person who loves you to death."
Sick of being asked whether "Tere Naam" is a replay of his own relationship with Aishwarya, Salman chuckles in exasperation.
"Everybody has asked me this question. You're also asking this although you know that the same plot has been made in three other languages.
"This guy Radhe keeps all his frustrations within himself. He keeps wondering why the girl can't see he's the one person that loves her the most."

Is Radhe the character close to Salman's heart?
"I'd do anything for those I care for. That one thing does make me like Radhe. But after a point the character is certainly not me."

ALLOWED TO GO ABROAD! - Mid-day: August 08, 2003

Two local courts today allowed bollywood star Salman Khan, facing trial in poaching cases, to go abroad for film shooting and live stage show. Chief judicial magistrate Mohammad Salim Mallik and judicial magistrate Maneesha Singh granted the permission to Khan on applications filed by actor's counsel Hastimal Saraswat separately in both the courts. Saraswat told the courts that Khan was scheduled to visit South Africa for the shooting of hindi feature film 'No Entry' from August 15 to September 6. He is also to perform at a live stage show in South Africa on September 7 and 8. He said the foreign visit of Khan, main accused in the three poaching cases, would not affect the trial in any way. After hearing arguments the two courts, in respective orders, allowed him to visit South Africa from August 15 to September 10. Besides the three cases of poaching the actor is also facing a case under arms act. The cases were registered in 1998 when Khan was here in connection with the shooting of Sooraj Barjatya's film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.

MID-AIR - HINDUSTAN TIMES: August 01, 2003

What happens when you're in mid-air, helpless and gasping for every bit of oxygen you can find to inhale? Well, ask the lovely Shilpa Shetty – it recently happened to her on a Delhi-Mumbai flight. Of course, she had a strong support system: co-star Salman Khan was travelling with her. Shilpa suddenly suffered from a breathing disorder and was wheezing due to lack of oxygen in her system. The cabin crew attended to her in seconds, giving her an oxygen mask to support her breathing. And, all through this ordeal, Salman was gently calming, comforting and reassuring her that it would all be under control. After all the panic and pain came to an end, Shilpa couldn't stop thanking the cabin crew for their life-saving help. And, in turn, the airline crew thanked Sallu for being the muscle of strength through this air-less crisis. Keeping up his witty and mischievous traits, before leaving the aircraft Sallu winked at the group of stewardesses and said, "Probably if we had a stretcher and we could call for a press conference, the scene would have been complete!" Well, that's Salman for you, playful as ever. So what if he's speeding through the clouds for a change!

DATES! - HINDUSTAN TIMES: July 30, 2003

For a long time, there have been rumours surrounding Salman Khan's first English venture Marigold. Will he do it? Won't he do it? When is it going to take off? Questions have been circulating in the industry for quite a while.
Siddharth Jain of Hyperion Pictures who are the co-producers of Marigold confirms Salman's role in Marigold. "Yes, Salman is of course doing the film," asserts Jain. "In fact, he is really keen to do it and right now the only thing that needs to be done is finalising dates. We intend to wrap up the film by the first quarter of next year since it is a one schedule film, and we want to start shooting by the end of this year."
Three to four American actresses have been short-listed to play the role opposite Salman, and if Jain's words are any thing to go by, our man is in demand because they will sign only that heroine whose free dates coincide with Salman's! "We will sign whoever can match the dates," says he. The start of this film has been delayed, and Jain explains why. "Around the time Salman signed our film, he also got some four-five other films. Right now, he has just come back to India after a concert, and he is trying his best to accommodate our film in his schedule as soon as possible."

TERE NAAM! - HINDUSTAN TIMES: July 29, 2003

Salman KhanSalman Khan's torrid love life is headlines again. This time on screen. But while there's no Vivek Oberoi to queer the pitch in 'Tere Naam', he still manages to lose the girl.

Sources close to Bollywood's enfant terrible insist 'Tere Naam' - 'unfortunately based on a true love story' - could be art imitating life. Although newcomer Bhumika Chawla, who plays the lead opposite Sallu baba in the film, isn't a patch on Aishwarya Rai's world-winning beauty, the parallels are a little hard to miss.

From an idyllic romance between two young people head-over-heels in love, the story gradually acquires tragic overtones when a misunderstanding tears them apart. Salman's character in the film is unable to come to terms with this separation and veers out of control. In a chain of events by now familiar to Salman-watchers, the emotionally distraught hero turns violent and gets into situations that defy logic.

His scrapes with the law notwithstanding, Salman denies reliving his on-off affair with Ash in 'Tere Naam'. "People say such things only because the film has been promoted as an unsuccessful love story. Its just coincidence that 'Tere Naam' is being released at a time when I don't share a very good relationship with Aishwarya. But believe me the film has nothing to do with real life. It's in fact a remake of the Telegu blockbuster 'Sethu' and the assignment came to me like any other", he says.

However Salman admits that like the protagonist of 'Tere Naam', he too is a victim of misunderstanding. According to the actor: "I have always been misunderstood and saddled with a 'bad-boy' image that I do not deserve. Let me once for and all set the record straight - no matter what the impression, I am not the short-tempered, ill-mannered brat people think I am."

PRESS CONFERENCE - InianTimes: July 21, 2003
Salman Khan
Bollywood’s Pocket Hercules Salman Khan stripped before us! Well, actually he was changing his shirt for an HT City photo-op. “My body is a temple for me. I work out every day, keep a healthy diet though I eat non- vegetarian food daily,” says Salman.

He nixes rumours about the realistic ‘inspiration’ in his next film, Tere Naam. “The film is a remake of a Tamil hit, Sethu. Do I look like I want my private life immortalised on screen? Radhey in Tere Naam is a passionate rebel, but he is not me.” He sports a couple of new looks in Tere Naam — a clean-shaven pate and long locks. “I had also added blue streaks to my hair for a show. I want to grow with each film and I want to the characters I play to look convincing,” he explains.

Despite controversies, his date diary is full. But Salman insists that he’s not on a signing binge: “I no longer need money or hits. All I want is job satisfaction. I’m working with many new directors — they are passionate about their work.”

At 37, he has all the trappings of a superstar: an apartment in Bandra, a Merc, an enviable bank balance. “I just want peace, I’ve had enough. The media should let my private life be. Give me a break from the headlines,” he says. Point noted, Salman.

The Khan roster
Forthcoming Films: Sanghaar, Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Marigold and Lucky
Fave Roles: “Maine Pyar Kiya, Baaghi, Saajan”

BHANSALI'S TWO NEW PROJECTS - REDIFF: July 18, 2003

It's official! Sanjay Leela Bhansali has decided to make two films in quick succession. Bhansali's Devdas made waves in India and all over the world last year. Now, he's back with yet another period film based on the historical romance between the legendary Maratha general Bajirao Peshwa and the courtesan Mastani.

For the coveted role of Bajirao, Bhansali has signed Salman Khan who worked in his earlier films – Khamoshi: The Musical and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. For Mastani, the astute filmmaker has zeroed in on the hot-and-saleable Kareena Kapoor.

In an exclusive interview, Bhansali said, "I couldn't see a better Bajirao than Salman. I know people will challenge me for my casting. But they did the same when I cast Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas and Ajay Devgan in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The doubts are in their minds, not mine. Everyone has a different take on every issue. But the final decision has to come from within me. While writing the screenplay I saw only Salman and Kareena in the title roles. I think Salman fits in perfectly, no doubt about that. When audiences see him they'll know what I mean. I write all my scripts with Salman in mind. He understands me perfectly on the sets. There is a sense of fun underlining the seriousness on the sets."

Bhansali says he didn't sign his favourite Khan for Devdas because Shah Rukh Khan suited the role better. Salman, admits Bhansali, was hurt. "I should have told him I intended to cast Shah Rukh. He wasn't hurt about not being in the cast, but about not being told. Finally it's the film that matters. Friendship and loyalty shouldn't come in the way of casting. If you compromise in the casting it is bound to expose eventually. Black has to be made only with Amitji [Amitabh Bachchan] and Bajirao Mastani with Salman."

The film will go on floors by May 2004.

SALMAN AXES FILM FOLLOWING THREATS - Radiosargam: July 18, 2003
Plans for a major new Indian film about the Hindu god Ram have been axed following a series of alleged threats from a religious group in India. GS Entertainment, the production company behind the movie, received warnings because Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was set to play the lead role and he's a Muslim. They have taken the threats seriously and have terminated the project because they didn't want to consider another actor replacing Salman Khan. The movie was set to become the most expensive Bollywood film ever.

SALMAN THREATENED... - filmfare: July 18, 2003
MUMBAI: Actor Salman Khan is reportedly receiving telephonic threats from Hindu hardliners who are opposed to his playing the role of Lord Ram in a Hindi film to be produced by Bunty Walia.

Deputy police commissioner Bipin Kumar Singh said the police had not received any complaint from the actor. However, sources in the police said the actor has been receiving threats. Apparently the protestors feel that given Salman's image as a "Bollywood brat" he should not play the role of a deity like Lord Ram. The actor was not available for comment.

SALMAN AND ASH MIGHT WORK TOGETHER AGAIN... - filmfare: July 17, 2003

Even if they have parted ways in reality, chances are that Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai would be reunited on reel in Pritish Nandy’s remake of Guru Dutt’s classic Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam. Khan is excited. “Yeah, I am doing Nandy’s Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam,” he says, “apart from Bajirao Mastani, Marigold and our home production based on the Ramayana. All of them will start next year.”

The two were last seen together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Nandy, who is just as excited about the project, says Salman was always the original choice. “I’d approached Salman long back,” recalls Nandy, “when the idea was taking shape.” Nandy says the search for the rest of the cast is on, and refuses to divulge details of who is playing what. “I can only say that they have agreed to be in the film.”

As for Aishwarya Rai doing the film, Nandy says the actress has given him “100 per cent assurance that she will do the film”. Though neither of them have been formally signed, Nandy says he respects verbal commitments from professionals.  “Ash is away now. But I trust her.”

Says the former Miss World, who is in London shooting for Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice: “Yes, I am doing the film, if that’s what Nandy and Deepa Mehta have told you so themselves.”

SALMAN TRIAL DEFERRED TO SEP 10 - Filmfare: July 03, 2003

MUMBAI: The sessions court on Wednesday deferred the trial of actor Salman Khan in the hit- and-run case to September 10. However, additional principal sessions judge A.J. Dholakia pulled him up for his absence in the court.

The judge warned the actor to remain present on the next date. The actor’s vehicle had rammed into a laundry last year in Bandra, killing one. The judge adjourned the case in view of the actor’s appeal pending in the Bombay high court.

The judge granted the actor exemption from court appearance on health grounds for a day, but expressed displeasure on the fact that no medical details were submitted.

Salman Khan had filed an appeal in the high court seeking the quashing of the trial court’s order holding him, prima facie, guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The sessions court on May 2 had refused to drop the charge of culpable homicide.

The actor had received a certified copy of the trial court order on June 10 and subsequently moved the high court in appeal on June 27.

Advocate S.V.Marwadi, representing the actor, informed the sessions court that the high court would be hearing the appeal on Friday. The actor has urged the high court to stay the trial till his appeal is decided.

Mr. Marwadi said the public prosecutor in the high court, Shahaji Shinde, was supposed to request the sessions court prosecutor not to proceed with the trial immediately.

Mr. Marwadi also filed an application seeking an exemption for the actor from appearance in the court on the grounds that he was in the US for medical treatment.

He said the actor was scheduled to arrive in India in time for the trial but had been delayed because of some travel hitches

SALMAN PETITIONS HIGHCOURT TO DISQUALIFY - Filmfare: July 03, 2003

Legally beleaguered Salman Khan is filing a petition in the Mumbai High Court to disqualify a recent Sessions Court order that refuses to remove the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 –II) against him. Recently, Sessions Court principal judge A J Dholakia had rejected Khan’s petition for removing the charge levelled against him.

SALMAN-KAREENA-MANISHA IN 'S.B.A.G' - indiafm: June 24 2003

Rumours are rife that Pritish Nandy has assigned the directorial reins of his ambitious venture SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM to Deepa Mehta. When this writer called Nandy to verify the news, all he said was, “Wait and watch.”

The grapevine is also abuzz with the news that Salman Khan [in the role of Guru Dutt], Kareena Kapoor [Waheeda Rehman] and Manisha Koirala [Meena Kumari] have been finalised for the film. “That's absolutely untrue,” Nandy clarifies, “We haven't finalised anyone yet.”

Nandy continues in the same breath, “We're in the process of finalising the star cast and have been negotiating with a few stars, but haven't really signed anyone yet.” A clear picture will only emerge in two weeks from now, he adds. Watch this space!

SALMAN WANTS TO BE LUCKY BEFORE ....GOLD - REDIFF: June 19, 2003

Salman Khan's US concerts have seen a slump in audiences, which is becoming common for Bollywood live shows worldwide.

He might just be the first Bollywood star to admit it.

Says he, "People who come for the concerts are extremely receptive but attendance is low because ticket prices are too high. Even at a Madonna or a Michael Jackson concert, tickets are priced around $25. For Indian concerts, ticket prices are hiked up to $150 to $200. The Asian community in the US loves our concerts. But how can they spend $100 on tickets when they have more important things in life to spend on?" In the same breath he continues that "if some of them happens to be my fan, I can't ask them spend so much money just to watch me live, its the organizers that are to be blamed.

Salman Khan, who has already toured four US cities, will now perform in San Francisco, Vancouver, Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, Orlando and New Jersey. He will visit Europe before returning to India on July 6. Contrary to rumours, he has not been dropped from Carol Willard's Indo-American love story Marigold. The actor held extensive discussions with the director on his US tour. He plans to shoot for Marigold in January, for six to nine weeks, though the producers prefer October. Khan plans to start his home production Lucky - Not Time For Love - to be directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao -- in September. Lucky.., which he says has a "beautiful story," is a love story set during the Russian civil war. Sounding excited about his first international film, Khan says, "Marigold is not one of those crossover films. It is a proper Hollywood film. And it will get Asian cinema a lot of respect." The star is very impressed by the working style in Hollywood. "They know exactly what they want and how to get it."

BHANSALI's BAJIRAO FINDS A BRIDE - REDIFF: June 05, 2003
It's official now. Newcomer Bhumika Chawla will play Bajirao's wife in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao MastaniRani Mukherji, who was originally signed for the role, has had to back off due to date hassles. Rumour then had it that Esha Deol or Katrina Kaif might bag the role. Finally, however, it is Bhumika Chawla who will play Salman Khan aka Bajirao's bride.

Apparently, Bhansali saw the rushes of Satish Kaushik's Tere Naam, in which Chawla makes her Hindi film debut opposite Khan and signed her on. Chawla, who also stars in Boney Kapoor's Run, opposite Abhishek Bachchan, has earlier acted in Telugu films opposite stars like Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu.

Meanwhile, Kareena Kapoor has been approached to star in the coveted role of Bajirao's love, Mastani.

SALMAN-KATRINA...? - smashits: June 01, 2003

Salman Khan's dad Salim Khan thinks his son's marriage will turn the spoilt Salman into a changed person. Sallu's sister Alvira also shares dad's view. She says that Sallu likes Katrina Kaif, and is her real good friend too. However, Katrina has been pretending for a long time, like, Sallu Who? But she confesses that she knows him, though they have hardly even met, she says. After the Vivek-Salman controversy followed by a media conference by Vivek, Salman flew off to London for a shoot. Incidentally, Katrina comes from London. Katrina joined him there and they were on shopping sprees! But Katrina claims to hardly know Sallu.

Yes, she is in the habit of going on joint shopping sprees with strangers. In Mumbai, Khans heaved a sigh of relief on the news emanating from London that every thing is okay, though not settled yet. The Khans are busy in finding a huge bungalow for Sallu and his girlfriend. Presumably, the family wishes Salman to settle down in London. Consequently, Sallu has been getting possessive already and sulking at her. Katrina is not far behind. However, she says she has to establish herself as an actress first. She needs two years to achieve this. She has already earned fame in 'Boom' though. Katrina is sure that Salman will wait for her!

BHANSALI NEEDS TO REMOVE UNCERTAINTIES ... - smashits: June 01, 2003

The casting of 'Bajirao Mastani' is still uncertain. The industry is watching every single move of Sanjay Leela Bhanshali. Salman Khan is all set to play the lead opposite Kareena Kapoor. Though Aishwarya, Rani, Esha Deol and even Katrina Kaif were talked about to play this role initially', but the final choice fell on Kareena. Ismail Darbar will give the music. However, if he will be a part of the film or not remains to be seen. No one can deny the fact that 'Devdas' is what it is because of his music 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. A. R. Rahman is also being mentioned as a part of the film. However, Ismail says that, though he and Sanjay are talking about the film, but nothing has been finalized. About the news that Sanjay had approached other music directors as well, Ismail said, "It is quite possible, but I have no clue about it. As I said, it is not final yet as far as I am concerned." All said and done, one can't forget the magnitude of creative problems that Sanjay and Ismail both have had in the past and especially during 'Devdas' when Ismail almost walked out of the film and Monty had to complete the background score. In this context, Ismail admits they did have some problems but all of them were solved afterwards. The uncertainty about the cast and the musician continues to haunt the industry in the absence of any announcement by Bhansali.

SALMAN & KAREENA IN BARJATYA'S NEXT ? - mid-day: May 29, 2003
Even before the much touted Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon has released, director of Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun…?, Sooraj Barjatya is in the news for his next project. Apparently, after his Kareena-Hrithik-Abhishek starrer Main Prem Ki… releases in June, he will waste no time in announcing his next project. Salman's secretary has admitted that Barjatya has verbally promised Salman that he will be doing his next film, and that Kareena Kapoor had been decided on as the heroine. Interestingly, Salman and Kareena will also be seen together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. Could be a new pair in the making maybe….?

SALMAN & KARISMA IN BARJATYA'S NEXT ? - samahits: May 29, 2003
Karisma Kapoor has bagged a movie under the banner of Sooraj Barjatya who made super hit films like 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun' and 'Maine Pyaar Kiya'. The hero of Sooraj's forthcoming movie is none other than Salman Khan. The Salman Khan-Karisma Kapoor pair will mesmerize the audience who has been deprived of good movies for quite some time.

SALMAN IN 'LUCKY - NO TIME FOR LOVE' - Indiafm: May 23, 2003
Even the title of producers Bunty Walia, Sohail Khan, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar's Salman Khan starrer has been finalised. It is LUCKY… NO TIME FOR LOVE. The film also stars Mithun Chakraborty in a pivotal role, while a new leading lady [opposite Salman] is yet to be finalised.

To be directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the film will be shot in Russia. Adnan Sami will compose the music.

SALMAN KHAN PLAYS THE LEAD ! - Indiafm: May 21, 2003
A lot has been said and written about Sanjay Leela Bhansali's new project, after DEVDAS. There has been tremendous speculation about his new film. Reams have been devoted to this keenly anticipated film. But none have really got the official statement from Bhansali himself.

Like always, IndiaFM is the first to get the EXCLUSIVE info on Bhansali's new project. While in Johannesburg [South Africa] with this writer, Bhansali spoke at length about his forthcoming film.

The project, titled BAJIRAO MASTANI, will star Salman Khan in the lead, as we all know by now. “But,” Bhansali clarifies, “I haven't signed any leading lady yet. Yes, I've been talking to a few people and have met a few actresses as well, but none have been finalized so far.”

But the media was busy speculating that names like Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherji have already signed on the dotted line. “That's news to me,” Bhansali laughs, “Just imagine, learning about the star cast of your film from the media!” On a serious note, he elucidates, “I haven't spoken to any person [media] yet, so how can they throw names? Believe me, I've yet to finalise the leading ladies.”

Not just the stars, but Bhansali, it seems, is opting for a new music director this time around [HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM and DEVDAS had music by Ismail Darbar]. There's talk that he had approached A.R. Rahman to score the music. Is it true? “Well, I won't deny I have met him. But everything is in the preliminary stages. It's premature to talk about it,” he says.

Bhansali also points out that he won't start the project this year. “The film will go on the floors only next year. I haven't even completed the scripting yet.”

The expectations from Bhansali's new film are gargantuan. “That scares me,” he tells me, “There're enormous responsibilities on your shoulders even before you start a project. But life itself is a challenge, you've got to accept the challenge each day.” True!

'THE SHOW STOPPER' - MID-DAY: May 18, 2003

JOHANNESBURG: In an edge-of-the-seat spectacle, the IIFA Awards 2003 grand finale enthralled thousands of fans including hundreds of South African Indians here, but the show-stopper was Salman Khan, who came down literally from the air and danced his way from the middle of the audience into their hearts. The Bollywood 'badboy' act last evening ironically came just after his former beau Aishwarya Rai got the best actress award for Devdas, and equally ironically, he ended his 15 minutes of glory with a tragic song from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, in which they played lead roles. Coming down in filmi-style tied on a rope in the middle of the auditorium surrounded by dancing dames, Khan created a security scare with scores of fans running towards him and clicking his pictures. True to his 'Shirtless Salman' image, the beefy actor took off his T-shirt and hugged his dancers before leaving the stage.

BHANSALI OPTS FOR A.R. RAHMAN - REDIFF: May 15, 2003

After Ismail Darbar composed the highly popular music of Devdas, one expected director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to repeat him in his next venture, Bajirao Mastani. But that is not to be. Bhansali has signed ace music director A R Rahman instead.

Bajirao Mastani stars Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the title roles.

The film's second leading lady, however, is yet to be decided. Earlier rumours had hinted that Katrina Kaif, who is apparently seeing Salman, was to do the role. Now, however, the grapevine is buzzing about how Esha Deol has been approached to play Salman's wife in the film.

BAGHBAAN! - REDIFF: May 14, 2003

It is the last day of the shoot for director Ravi Chopra's Baghbaan. And Ravi is tense. "Mr Bachchan is supposed to deliver a 12-page monologue," he says. "This is the film's finale." The Renaissance Resort in Powai, in north-central Mumbai, wears a hushed but festive look. Snazzily dressed couples occupy the sofas and divans in the lobby.

A party? "No," giggles actress Divya Dutta, "they're junior artistes. They'll occupy the conference room where Amitji will deliver his speech to us. We're all waiting to hear him. We'll forget we've to act and will all be speechless once he starts speaking." Divya plays one of Amitabh's two daughters-in-law who scheme to separate him from the love of his life, Hema Malini. The Baghbaan unit, meanwhile, awaits Hema's arrival.

The conference room gets fuller by the minute. Samir Soni, who plays Divya's husband, smiles shyly. He's the philosopher on the sets, launching into lectures on life at the drop of a hat. Among the guests who will form part of the day's shot are Avtar Gill, Anang Desai and Asrani, who is almost unrecognisable as a Sardarji.

In a corner, Salman Khan, who plays Amitabh's good son, memorises his lines. "I play the best son in the world to the best actor in the world," he grins.

The radiantly beautiful Hema Malini soon walks in, making all heads turn. She converses with Suman Ranganathan while Ravi, who is veteran filmmaker B R Chopra's son, readies for the arrival of the Big B. Many years ago, he had directed Amitabh in Zameer (1974; the cast included Vinod Khanna and Saira Banu). Now Baghbaan appears like a silver lining on the doddering Chopra banner.

Post-lunch, Amitabh walks in with leonine strides. Everyone wants his attention. Though he is terribly tense -- "It's a very long speech and a culmination point in the script," he explains -- he has a hug and warm words for every cast member. They all come forward to greet him. Only Aman Verma (Pran Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaye) waits for Amitabh to notice him. Salman ribs Aman about his 'starry' attitude.

Soon, the eagerly awaited shot begins. Before going on stage, Amitabh smiles triumphantly at Divya, as though to say it's time for her character's comeuppance. "He's hypnotic," she sighs. "There won't be a single dry eye in the audience. They'll love Mr Bachchan when he has his say about how mean we've been." As the Big B delivers a moving lyrical speech about family ties and lost values, eyes turn moist in the audience. And no one needs to use glycerine.

SALMAN-AKSHAY! - REDIFF: May 14, 2003

Both are hunks. Both have had female fans drool over them for years now. While one is still footloose, the other turned papa less than a year ago. Now, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar will bond together on-screen for the first time in producer Sajid Nadiadwala's Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. The film, which is said to be a comedy, will be directed by David Dhawan under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandsons. The shooting for the film will begin in July. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi is scripted by Anees Bazmee who, with Dhawan, has delivered hits like Aankhen (Govinda, Chunky Pandey, Raageshwari, Ritu Shivpuri), Shola Aur Shabnam (Govinda, the late Divya Bharti) and Bol Radha Bol (Rishi Kapoor, Juhi Chawla).

SALMAN WANTS KATRINA IN BHANSALI'S PROJECT? - Rediff: April 30, 2003
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali wants Kareena Kapoor to play Mastani in 'Bajirao Mastani'. He wants Rani Mukerji as Bajirao's wife. Salman Khan, who has been signed on as Bajirao, has other ideas. He would like his latest flame, Katrina Kaif, in either of these roles. Salman and Katrina reportedly met Bhansali in his office where Sallu reportedly attempted to change the director's mind.

TIMELESS LOVE! - SCREENINDIA: April 18, 2003

Another filmmaker who is convinced that period films are the wave of the future is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. After the grandiose Devdas, Bhansali has embarked upon another magnum opus, Bajirao-Mastani and is all set to bring two other legendary lovers, Maratha Sardar Bajirao and the courtesan, Mastani, to life. Salman Khan has been cast to play the legendary warrior. Bhansali recently had a special photo-session with Salman and seeing him in period regalia, Bhansali couldn’t hide his happiness because his hunch, once again, had proved right.

HE'S BACK! - MID-DAY: April 12, 2003

Salman Khan (he’s back!) with Akshay Kumar at L’Officiel’s first anniversary party at the InterContinental Hotel on Thursday.

L’officiel, the magazine that spells luxury, turned one on Thursday and their birthday was celebrated with extravagance. Since L’Officiel is all about fashion and luxury, everyone turned up dressed for the occasion.

Also seen were the Kapoor sisters — Kareena and Karisma (wearing black), and, of course, all Mumbai’s fashionable crowd: from Amrita Arora to Preity Zinta and even Salman Khan.

SALMAN AND GOVINDA TOGETHER? - Indiafm: April 11, 2003

After producing a string of successful films, Sajid Nadiadwala decided to stay out of the limelight. Well, he's back to his first love – film production – after a sabbatical. If grapevine is to be believed, the producer of JUDWAA and HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA is planning a casting coup of sorts for his next film.

For his new venture, not titled yet, Sajid is planning to cast Salman Khan and Govinda for the first time together. And who else but David Dhawan would direct the film. “I've worked with David, Salman and Govinda in the past,” Sajid avers, “So bringing them together in a project won't be a problem.”

He continues, “But let me clarify, I haven't spoken to Salman about it [the actor was in London at the time of writing this piece!], nor have I met Govinda to discuss the project. I just bounced this idea off to David, but see how fast word spreads in the industry. We just had a meeting yesterday and you're already asking about it.”

After a pause, Sajid continues, “But if at all the project materializes, it would be a treat to watch two of the finest talents in one frame. David shares a fantastic rapport with both the actors and since Salman and Govinda haven't worked together, the project would be something to look forward to.” I agree!

REFUSES TO TALK! - TIMES OF INDIA: April 11, 2003

Actor Salman Khan, who returned to Mumbai on Wednesday midnight after attending a nine-day shooting of Ravi Chopra's film Baaghban in London, refused to comment on former friend Aishwarya Rai's decision not to work with him. His family and close friends maintained that Khan did not wish to speak about either Rai or Vivek Oberoi who had charged him of threatening him with life on April 1.

"He has decided to talk about it at an appropriate time," said family friend and producer Bunty Wallia. According to a source close to Salman, he did not wish to badmouth Aishwarya "with whom he had had a deep relationship for five years." "In any case, Salman is too emotionally upset to speak about the episode," the source added.

Since Wednesday afternoon, rumours abounded that Khan would hold a press conference after his arrival from London to present his side of the story. In fact, a news portal even went ahead with the news that Khan had indeed called a press meet on Thursday afternoon. His friends and family tried to keep the media confused by giving different dates of his arrival from London. The only comment that Khan had given after Rai's earlier public statement about their break-up was: "Let her say what she wants. Let her be the hero. I've nothing to say. From the time I came into the industry I've been besieged by problems."

BACK IN CITY! - Mid-day: April 10, 2003

Salman back in city: Salman Khan arrived at the international airport at about 2 am from London where he had gone to shoot for Ravi Chopra’s Baaghban, just after his spat with Vivek Oberoi.

SALMAN NOT REPLACED FROM "MARIGOLD" - Indiafm: February 27, 2003
More and more journo's are into desk-jobs these days – they not only have fertile minds but also extremely dramatic imaginations. Take the case of MARIGOLD, the Hollywood film starring Salman Khan in the lead. According to a section of the press, Shah Rukh Khan had replaced Salman Khan in the project since the producers were demanding bulk dates and Salman wasn't able to provide.

But the producers have denied the news outright. When this writer called on Siddharth Jain, Vice-President of Hyperion Pictures India, the producers of MARIGOLD, he decided to put the record straight. Here's the official and exclusive version:

“It's a lie that Salman is not offering bulk dates to us. On the contrary, Salman has been co-operation personified. He has promised to allot 90 days bulk dates to us, whenever the film starts. He's gone to the extent of assuring us that he won't shoot for any other film in that period, nor will he do any stage performance once he begins shooting for the film."

“The actual reason why MARIGOLD has been delayed is that we've yet to finalize the Hollywood actress in the central role. It is only after we sign the Hollywood name will we sign the Indian actress, who will feature in the second lead. So till the time we finalize things, we won't be able to start the shooting. Hopefully, we should finalize the leading lady [Hollywood] by March-end."

“We've never approached Shah Rukh for the film. Never. Salman was our first and final choice. I hope that sets the record straight.”

MITHUN ADDED IN SALMAN'S "LUCKY" - Indiafm: February 25, 2003
While on Mithun Chakraborty, the actor has been signed for Salman Khan's home-production LUCKY as well. To be directed jointly by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru for producers Bunty Walia and Sohail Khan, the film stars Salman Khan in the lead along with a new girl and will be shot in a start-to-finish schedule in Russia.

But there seems to be a problem with regards to the title LUCKY. While Radhika and Sapru claim that they've decided to call their film LUCKY, Universal Music has gone ahead and registered a series of titles with LUCKY, like LUCKY, TU HAI LUCKY, MEREE LUCKY, MUJHE LUCKY CHAHIYE, LUCKY MEREE JAAN, O MEREE LUCKY, I LOVE LUCKY, SUNO ZARA LUCKY, EK THEE LUCKY, MILO KABHI LUCKY and MUJHE MILEE LUCKY.

Just to refresh one's memory, Radhika and Sapru were earlier associated with Universal Music and Radhika was signed to direct Zayed Khan's debut vehicle for Universal
.

ADNAN SAMI TO COMPOSE FOR SALMAN'S "LUCKY" -  Rediff: February 20, 2003
Adnan Sami is all set to compose the music for Salman Khan's next home production tentatively titled Lucky.
Produced by Salman's company G S Entertainment, Lucky will be directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru of Universal Music, the combination that produced several of singer Falguni Pathak's hit music videos. Now, the two are on the lookout for a new 18-year-old girl to star opposite Salman in the film.
"It has never been done -- this nationwide hunt. We have been in touch with agencies across India and the talent hunt is still on," confirms Bunty Walia, Salman's partner and producer friend. "We will start shooting for the film soon. Salman will shoot for it for 45 days in a start to finish schedule."
"Adnan, of course, is the icing on the cake," smiles Walia.

Apparently, Adnan has already started working on the songs and has promised to come up with a stellar score. Salman Khan may not be popular with the media but the actor sure tops popularity charts when it comes to the industry.
Adnan, it seems, adores Salman and instantly agreed to compose for his home production. "Salman and Adnan get along like a house on fire," says a friend of Khan's. Incidentally, Adnan is a permanent fixture at all the parties held at Khan's Bandra residence.
At the last get-together, Sami entertained all the guests with his popular Lift kara de, while Khan did an impromptu jig

SALMAN TO PLAY LORD RAM ! - Filmfare: February 09, 2003
Salman’s just turned over a new leaf. And it’s high time after all the bad publicity he’s been getting. In fact, he’s not only mended his ways, he’s also going to be the epitome of goodness. However, this time it’s only on screen. Rumours has it that the Khans’ home production company G S Entertainment is going to produce a film on the Ramayan, with Salman playing Lord Ram and his brother Sohail Khan portraying Lakshman. The grapevine insists that G S Entertainment will rope in a Hollywood company as co-partner in the deal and even cast Hollywood actors in other roles in the film. There is no doubt that this film could change Salman’s entire image considering that films on such topics are a craze in India, not only for the rich Indian heritage that such films capture but also because of religious reasons. With Salman already having signed the Hollywood production ‘Marigold’, looks like the Khan is going to give serious competition to the likes of Tom Cruise and Keanu Reaves!

Salman will be seen in a song from the film – its pasteurization will be held on January 25. “Salman has been gracious enough to accept the offer,” Raveena reveals, “It's just a special appearance. A NEW WOMAN IN SALMAN'S LOVE LIFE? - b4utv: January 21, 2003
His relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai being a thing of past, ‘bratty’ Salman is reported to be cozying up to a new woman.
Yes, if the latest grapevine is to be believed, there is indeed a new woman in Salman’s life. She is gorgeous model-turned-actress Katrina Kaif.
Salman and Katrina were seen ‘chilling out’ together at brother Sohail Khan’s birthday party at a suburban joint in Mumbai.
As the party continued till late in the night, Salman and Katrina left the noisy dance room and were seen engrossed in what seemed like an intimate talk in the lawn. The two are believed to be seeing each other nowadays.
Katrina, daughter of a Kashmiri father and British mother, will make her film debut with Kaizad Gustaad's ‘Boom’ that also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman.

SALMAN GETS "LUCKY" - indiafm: January 10, 2003
Salman Khan is signing films with a vengeance… seems like. After bagging two prestigious projects – Pritish Nandy's new next film and B.R. Chopra's BAGHBAAN – the actor has now given his consent to yet another project. To be produced by brother Sohail Khan and Bunty Walia's G.S. Entertainments, the film will be directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru jointly.

Radhika and Vinay were associated with Universal Music Company at a point of time. Radhika has to her credit several music videos that were appreciated immensely. But not many are aware that she was all set to direct Zayed Khan's launch pad for Universal, much before CHURA LIYAA HAI TUMNE went on the floors. But that film never took off.

Coming back to the Salman project, the film is titled LUCKY and it will co-star a new heroine. “We're on the lookout for a leading lady, someone who's 18-19 years old,” producer Bunty Walia tells me. The film will mount the sets in June in Russia with a start-to-finish 2-month shooting schedule.

Meanwhile, the producers are contemplating signing Adnan Sami to compose the music of the film.

Shedding light on her role, Chopra says, "Salman and Mahima's role in the film are next to Amitabh's role in the film, in terms of significance. Although, I must clarify, it's a special appearance." It's for the first time that Salman and Mahima have been teamed for a project.

"Holly Valance will become only the second Westerner ever to appear in a bona-fide Bollywood extravaganza," the newspaper stated. "Capitalizing on her inexplicable popularity in the Subcontinent, the mega budget music tells the oh-so plausible tale of a European princess falling for the charms of an impoverished Indian boy."

SALMAN KHAN WITH BIG. B IN "BAGHBAN" - indiafm: January 01, 2003
Salman Khan has bagged yet another prestigious project – B.R. Chopra's BAGHBAAN, being directed by Ravi Chopra. It was heard that the role was initially offered to Shah Rukh Khan, then Akshay Kumar and later Akshaye Khanna, but due to some reason or the other, things didn't work out.

However, Ravi Chopra denies that he offered the role to three different actors before settling for Salman. “We'd only approached Shah Rukh, who expressed his inability to do the film since he's too committed with his home-productions,” Ravi states, “That's when we approached Salman, who agreed instantaneously.”

He also clarifies that the role is not a mere special appearance, as is being believed. “It's a significant, full-fledged role,” he discloses.

SALMAN IN PNC's / NANDY's NEXT - indiafm: December 31, 2002
Another news doing the rounds is that Pritish Nandy is remaking Guru Dutt's classic SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM. Although the casting is undecided, Nandy, we're told, has already signed Salman Khan to essay the role that was enacted by Guru Dutt in the classic.

"That's completely true,"
Nandy confirms, "We're going ahead with the film. But I wish to clarify that we haven't finalized anyone, barring Salman." But Nandy must've surely finalized the director. "No, not yet. Salman asked me the same question – who'd direct the film? Well, we at PNC [Pritish Nandy Communications] don't work that way. We believe in completing our script and then assigning the reins to the right guy," Nandy adds.

While the details will be finalized by next week, Nandy reveals that the budget of the film is Rs. 25 crores.
