DID YOU KNOW??
Dogs pant to cool themselves off. Unlike humans, dogs do not have sweat glands (except for a few in the pads of their feet), so they cannot regulate their body temperature through perspiration. When a dog pants, he takes cool air in through his nose and exhales warm air through his mouth. This helps to keep the dog's body temperature at a normal 101 to 102 degrees. Because dogs depend on this behavior to survive, it is important, especially in warm weather, never to leave a dog in a hot, confined space.
The inside of a car parked in the summer sun can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes, and a scorching 120 degrees in a half an hour, even with the windows open. It is easy to see that when the temperature outside the dog is higher than his body temperature, panting will not help to cool him off. In fact, it will make things worse.
Licking is the cat's way of grooming herself. unlike dogs, cats are very fastidious and spend a great deal of time each day cleaning their fur. The cat's saliva contains a kind of "detergent" that keeps the fur clean and sweet smelling. And the cat's rough tongue also removes dirt and dad hair from the coat.
Licking has other uses in addition to grooming. On hot days, saliva licked onto the fur evaporates and helps to keep the cat cool. Like the dog, the cat has sweat glands only in her feet, so licking is an extremely impprtant way of regulating her body temperature.
Also, when the cat's fur is exposed to sunlight, the essential nutrent vitamin D is produced. So, when you see your cat sitting on the windowsil and licking she is also getting her vitamins!
It has long been thought that one human year is equal to seven dog years, but in reality, it's not that simple. Dogs do most of their growing up during the first year of life. As we know, by age one a dog is full grown and is able to have puppies. A one-year-old dog is about the same as a 15 year old person. At two, your dog is equivalent to a 24 year old adult. For each of the following two dog years, add four human years, so a dog at 4 is a 32 year old person. Now you'll need to add five human years for each dog year.A 12 year old dog is a senior citizen if you realize that he is 72 in human years.
