Dogs pant to cool themselves off. Unlike humans, dogs do not have sweat glands (except for a few in the pads of their feet), so they cannot regulate their body temperature through perspiration. When a dog pants, he takes cool air in through his nose and exhales warm air through his mouth. This helps to keep the dog's body temperature at a normal 101 to 102 degrees. Because dogs depend on this behavior to survive, it is important, especially in warm weather, never to leave a dog in a hot, confined space.
The inside of a car parked in the summer sun can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes, and a scorching 120 degrees in a half an hour, even with the windows open. Licking is the cat's way of grooming herself. unlike dogs, cats are very fastidious and spend a great deal of time each day cleaning their fur. It has long been thought that one human year is equal to seven dog years, but in reality, it's not that simple. Dogs do most of their growing up during the first year of life. As we know, by age one a dog is full grown and is able to have puppies. A one-year-old dog is about the same as a 15 year old person. At two, your dog is equivalent to a 24 year old adult. For each of the following two dog years, add four human years, so a dog at 4 is a 32 year old person. Now you'll need to add five human years for each dog year.A 12 year old dog is a senior citizen if you realize that he is 72 in human years. |
